Wow- that was high. I think my "Lens Portfolio" has done much better than the stock market.
It's a solidly made lens, but you have to be careful that the surface behind the Aperture blades do not haze over. If they do, clean it before damage occurs. This is true in most of the Canon RF lenses.

I will check my 50/1.5 out tonight for such haze. I took a few photos with it at the end of a roll of film, and the images came out very nice. It reminds me of the Zeiss Jena pre-war 5cm 1.5, but with more punch.

More punch? You mean more contrast, or sharpness? I refuse to keep looking for the elusive (and now extravagant) Canon 50/1.5 - My Zeiss will do me fine.
$550 is ridiculous.

I agree, super lens. Price way out of control.

Yes, that was an annoying, ridiculous outcome. I'll stick with my Nikkor LTM 50s until everyone calms down about this lens.

Keep your eyes out for Canon VT bodies, that`s where I found mine the whole rig was like $375! and a model bought it for me to pay for a photoshoot.....I later traded the VT body for a 45' IIIC K "non stamp" so it was an all around great deal, but sometimes these do slip by on VT`s ~ shoot me your email and next time I see one someplace I`ll let you know first

I agree that $550 is a bit high. But extravagant? Hmmm:

It's a lens that will do in a pinch, I guess...

Don't get all defensive Mr. Steve. You know I am a fan of that lens and was willing to pay a lot for one. I think it was a badly chosen word that set your teeth on edge. Rather than "extravagant" I should have said "over-priced" because that guy on ebay got KEH dollars for his sale.
And that shot is very good and very "punchy." But I got punch with my Canon EF mounted with a Canon FD 50/1.8 lens and the entire kit cost less than that lens!

$550 is 8 times what mine cost. But I did shim mine, and clean the rear surface behind the aperture blades. at one time, I had 2 and a half Canon 50/1.5's. I traded one to Joe, and completed the half one using the rear of a J-3. The "Whole" one that I kept is perfect.
Again, my Lens Portfolio is offsetting the Mutual Funds.

Ain't that the truth! I got mine for a very reasonable price from a very reasonable member here (Roland), and now it's the ONLY thing in my "portfolio" that's going up these days....
No offense taken, btw, Jim.

Jim,
Now you yourself use the term "punchy"! I meant that there was higher contrast. The old Zeiss Jean lens is pretty sharp.

You are certainly right, Raid. On both counts.

How much does this lens really worth? I am looking to try one since my zm 50/1.5 is gone...

Steve - those are great images, but I'm confused, what lens did you use, and what film??

Thanks, Ted. All were shot w/ a Canon 50/1.5. The b&w was shot w/ Kodak BW400cn (my favorite C-41 b&w film). The rest were shot w/ Portra 400NC, IIRC.

With all the bells and whistles, *hood/caps/stock filter and case* EASY $500/$550! ~ I WOULD`NT SELL MINE FOR LESS!!!!!How much does this lens really worth? I am looking to try one since my zm 50/1.5 is gone...
*Well I`d never sell mine
People seem to forget just how rare this lens is compared to other famous fast lenses of the 1950`s.
I think they made like 40,000+ Nkkor f1.4/50 SC in LTM and only like 9,000 Canon f1.5`s, so that`s hardly a comparsion.....

Good info. Steve

Your 4th photo in that set is just excellent. Using color and modern films really shows how this lens equals (or betters) modern lenses.
Often, examples from this lens are portraits which are great, but show a unique swirly bokeh which is interesting, but your photos show more than this.

I would have gone to $450, which I think is fair for a copy in good shape, no major defects to the glass. I still look at this place for pretty well considered opinions/costs of Canon lenses.

And Steve - I forgot to compliment you on your photos posted up above. They are all excellent and I think can stand up to a comparison with any German lens. (GASP!) Uh oh. Now I did it...
