Heliar 50/2 Lens

Just took my Heliar 50mm/2.0 for a spin last weekend. Love its construction and operation! Really smooth focusing ring and from what I see from the scans it is not as sharp as my Nokton but has a character that reminds me of Elmar M 50mm/2.8

I have a few in my gallery, shot with an R-D1. Check out Still life #1 and #2, Bar/reflections, Tomate and 'A Washington institution'. Very nice lens.

Cheers,
Kirk

I really like this lens - it is sharp, not too contrasty with good colour rendition. A sample picture

May not be as sharp as the 40 f/1.4 Nocton, but is plenty sharp, very smooth and compact...taken the last week of the season at Jacob's Field Cleveland..Ilford FP4+..

Any experiences with the Heliar 50/2 Lens? I bought an R3M body only. Now I am considering the Heliar 50/2 Lens.

I have one, and also have a 50mm f/2 Summicron. The Heliar is not that much smaller than the Summicron when it's in shooting position. I have not seen it side by side with the 50mm f/2.8 Elmar, but the Elmar I remember as quite a bit smaller.

It seems to me that the Summicron is much sharper, especially wide open; you would expect that from the Heliar's simpler design. I like the Summicron's images, so I would not want to have the Heliar as my only 50mm. I do like having both of them. (Especially right at the moment, because my Summicron needs some repair!) I guess I could see bolting the Heliar on if I knew I was going to be shooting a lot of available light portraits and wanted to flatter the subject a bit.
