Hello all.

I am new here and hope, oh need, some can help me.

I am used to digital cameras and also film, are using a vintage Pentax Asahi Sportmatic. Not much, but I have started.

The old cameras feels so good, quality and all, that is why I am thinking....How about a rangefinder camera?????

So, how are a vintage rangefinder to use? Hard to get good quality photos?
How about service and repair on the cameras? Have heard that a rangefinder needs a lot of adjusting, done by professionals, to keep the focus right. Is that right?

When talking about camera, witch vintage model, if any, is "better" to start with?

Oh, yes, I like the look of the Zeiss rangefinders, cooool:cool:

All help, tips is needed and I am happy for all help I get.

Good sunday evening to you all.

Hi and welcome to the forum; I am sure you are going to like it here.

Rangefinders are not for every one; either you like it, or you don't. I would suggest starting with a cheap model just to see how a rangefinder works for you. Cheap models could be:

Rank Mamiya/Mamiya 4
Ricoh 500G
Both fully manual

Konica C35 - fully automatic but with a rangefinder

A camera 30-50 years old might need a CLA (Cleaning/Adjusting/Lubricating). But as long as it works the only thing that might need occasional adjusting (rarely but it happens) is the rangefinder. Most models have a small screw to make the adjustment; no tech. personnel needed here. Search the net for a particular model if needed.

The Zeiss models are indeed cool looking, but rather expensive for my taste. Still if you get the hang of rangefinders Zeiss or Voigtländer are cheaper alternatives to Leica.

Also you could visit the HeadBartenders page for more info on the different models:

Take a look at "Compact 35's"

Happy shoting
