Hi everyone,
I have been lurking around your forum for a few weeks and finally decided to come out of hiding. Recently I bought obtained two FSU cameras a Kiev 4 and a FED 2. My kids think I need an intervention or rehab so I stop buying cameras.
I am new to rangefinders so I will be asking for everyone's help/advice.

Welcome, Mary. And kudos to you for starting out with a couple of very nice yet still reasonably priced cameras. Do show us some shots from those cameras when you can. And don't worry about what the kids think - they'll either "get it" when they see your shots or they won't. Either way, you'll still enjoy the process and likely the results, too.
Best,
Randy

Be sure to take the "guy or gal" poll in RF polls, as they have been gaining on us again.

Welcome aboard, Mary!
If your kids are worried about two cameras, don't ever let 'em see any of this RFF site!
You have a good start with the Kiev and the FED.
Looking forward to seeing some shots of and by your "new" cameras!

Welcome Mary. You've come to the right place. RFF is a good place for FSU addicts to escape those pesky intervention groups.

Hi Mary,
Warmest welcome from Jerusalem. You have done the right thing !
Once upon a time, not long ago, when I took my Kiev to a family dinner, I was told it looks as if taken from the Filinstone series, and asked if there is a little bird inside carving the image...
But on the other hand, wether abroad or here in the streets, the Kievs attract a tremendous attention and interest from every corner.
Both the Kievs and Feds are of exhuberant beauty, still driving me nuts after several years. Both are very interesting to work with. True, some trouble of manipulation may appear at the begining but it will be easily overcome. Don't be shy to ask any question whatsoever, as we here like any excuse to chat about our gear.
There is also a tremendous amount of valuable info about these cameras on the net, guaranteeing your investment will last for life.
Together with your new cameras you will find this RFF is of the highest interest and crowded with the warmest folks.
Happy new life !

Welcome, Mary! Have you found out how to hold your Kiev properly yet? You'll certainly be astonished of how good old lenses can be. Have fun!
Also, never forget to wind FIRST and then set the shutter speed on your Fed! ANyway if it breaks, it doens't matter. Just buy another one

Hello Mary!...
Welcome from the U.K..just got the two camera's at the moment eh?..uhmm bet that will change!
If you get any more grief from the kids..just tape the camera cases to their noses (assuming you have the 'never-ready' cases) that'll keep em quiet for awhile..whilst they work out what they smell of!!...ha!

Thanks for the welcome,
The FSU are just the two newest cameras. I also have a Canon SD450 Elph, Canon 20D, Pentax K1000, Nikon FG and a Minolta Autocord. So you see why my girls think I need help.
I have mastered the Contax grip; it wasn't as difficult for my small hands as I thought it would be.
Reuben, I took the cameras to work to show some of the docs who are into photography and caused quite a buzz. They are mostly interested in digital SLRs, but had appropiate adoration for the rangefinders.

Welcome Mary, starting with a couple of nice FSU rangefinders, I hope you get great use from them. Please show us some of your images when you can.ICU said:Reuben, I took the cameras to work to show some of the docs who are into photography and caused quite a buzz. So, having a little attraction to classic camera acquisition, and fearlessly spreading the word to those at work, could you be known at work as the 'lady with GAS'?

Welcome to RFF Mary! You definitely found the right place for fellow camera addicts! You will love the Kiev... I am just putting my boots on to trudge through the snow & pick up my fourth at the post office. I am excited because its an early '54 KNeB engraved model.

Congrats on the KNEB... go get it!

Oops! Maybe Mary isn't best pleased to be accused of suffering from GAS! I should explain that GAS (at least here) stands for Gear Acquisition Syndrome, a condition that is an irritant when the the FSU variety strikes and much more serious (my wife says that it could be very detrimental to my health) when/if the Leica GAS gets a hold.
I'm sure that Mary will be fine, just put that syringe down, Mary........

Keep 'em guessing, it's good for them.
If you really want to bug them, go out and get a Crown Graphic and really embarass them in public with it.

Kevin,
The cameras themselves don't embarass my girls, I think they are more concerned for the safety of their college funds, LOL. The more cameras I have, more pics I take of them and they like to be on the other side of the lens. They have "borrowed" my FGs and Pentax.

Ah-ha -- ICU -- Now I get the significance of your handle!
I've never worked in an ICU (or been a "guest" there -- yet -- knock on wood) but I have a great respect for those who do. Back in another life I worked in a hospital lab and did spend some time "on the unit." I've been in a totally different field for some time now. (Low pay, megastress, lotsa politics, no job security, etc. made me decide on another career.) Just an aside ...
