Hello, I'm having a problem getting the auto mode to work on my OM-2. When I shoot in manual everything works fine, but when I switch to auto, the shutter stays open until I hit reset. And now one of the cameras shutter speed dial is very stiff. I have two OM-2 bodies, both recently CLA'd and from different sellers but exhibiting the same problem. This makes me believe either I'm doing something wrong or that theres a problem with my lens. I only have the one lens now, three more will arrive Monday. Has anyone else had this problem or have a solution for me? Thank you,
John

Are you testing it with the lens cap on? It will keep the shutter open for the long exposure required. The other thing is: are the batteries fresh?

Lens cap off in good light and fresh batteries......

I have an OM2 that does the same thing. A circuit problem of some kind, the repairman said. Didn't have it repaired, though. Just bought another one.

Would that happen to two different cameras at the same time??? That would be my luck tho... but they work fine in manual mode.....

Could be a circuit problem ... perhaps John will chime in.
Are you sure the batteries are good? By good I don't mean just "new" ... unless you have silver batteries, NOT ALKALINE, don't be so sure. You need SR44W, 303/357 or equivalent.
The shutter speed dial being stiff on one is disturbing for a camera that has had a CLA. I would ask the seller(s) of both cameras WHO did the CLA, provide a receipt, etc.

I thought it might be the batteries as well and put new ones in. I went to my local camera shop and got Sanyo MS76 silver oxide batteries. They replace the SR44 batteries refered to in the owners manual.

Yup, I would do the same and ask for proof of CLA. I mean they can say anything just to sell the item, esp by claiming the camera had an overhaul. I once met a seller who claimed his camera had been CLA-ed, one look at the gummy light seals told me otherwise.

Well, one the guys is a regular here at RFF and I trust him. As far as the other guy, I accidentally sent too much money for the purchase and he returned the excess. So they both seem like trustworthy fellows.

Well, these are old cameras, and can go bad any time, even with a recent CLA.

Yup, thats part of the risk using cameras 30 yr + old.....

Yeah, but that's part of the appeal. If you want adventure with security, buy new with a warranty!

And it's not like they are paperweights. They both work just fine in manual mode.

True, a circuit can go even with a CLA. I'd still find out who did the CLA, see if there's a way the tech(s) could take a look. The stiff shutter speed ring still bothers me.

Are you testing them with film loaded? The OM-2 gets it's reading for the slower speeds from the film itself when it's in auto mode. What this means is that without film, it doesn't really know where to set the speed and the shutter will stay open. Just trying to think of other possibilities here..

Both have film loaded. If Mr. Hermanson doesn't chime in this weekend I'll probably send him a note for advice....

If it is a circuit problem, wouldn't it affect metering in manual mode as well? Manual mode works fine.....

My bad OM2 works fine in manual mode. Just not in auto.

I was afraid of that, thanks Pickett. Oh, I wouldn't say its a bad OM-2, just auto mode challenged.

i do have the same problem with my newly bought OM2.
fully working in manual mode which is what I am shooting 90 percent of the time. Only during that once in a while time, when I switch to auto, than i realise it isnt working
