My initial guess when we were emailing earlier, and I still maintain it, is that the aperture blades are sticking. Glad all worked out.
I just got a Zuiko 24/2.8 in the mail, so will be going out to test it now.

I don't really know whats wrong with the lens, or even how to go about determining the problem. I'm not as technically savy as a lot of the folks here. I will send it back and hope to exchange it for another lens. All I know for sure is there is a cool fog bank that just rolled in so I'm off to the harbor to start enjoying my OM gear..........

Wouldn't sticky aperture blades be a problem in manual mode as well?

Glad that was the problem! It may not be sticky aperture blades, but the linkage that communicates aperture information while in metering/focusing mode. I'm not exactly sure how that works, but I'm pretty certain they are two different mechanisms.

DOH of course that's what it is! The aperture registration pin is probably bent. Don't ask me how I know this, but it can easily be remedied by using a small pair of pliers and GENTLY bending it straight again.

It wouldn't be immediately apparent, in manual mode the camera will fire at the selected shutter speed, even if you have a lens cap on. You can check for sticky aperture blades by looking through the lens and pressing the little tab on the side of the lens mount--this is the depth of field preview button.

Ok, I'm looking at the back of the lens with the red dot at the 12 O'clock position. There are two small flat tabs, one around 1 O'clock, the other near 8 O'clock. The tab near 8 O'clock looks bent inward and twisted a bit. I'd try to straighten it but it looks like it might snap off. I'm just going to return it as I got a beautiful 50/1.8 today along with an 28/2.8 and 85/2.

I have an Oly m2 MD and recently its meter shifted two stops. Any suggestions? [I set the compensation and the meter appears to be on target]. batteries check good and are relatively new. Like the machine. Meter works the same on manual and on auto. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

The cameras have a pretty complicated system of strings that go from the dials, maybe something went bump in the night there? Does your ISO dial work still?

Drats... We all know that commonsense tells us that this speck of dirt won't affect performance, BUT.... I don't think I live with a speck this big.

Yeah, seller has a 7 day return policy so will use that. It looks like light sealing material of some kind so I'd expect there's more in there that'll come loose.

I am floored by the 24mm's performance wide open, amazing stuff esp the pic with the leavesthe bg just melts away, love the character of the bokeh! Do you mind telling me how much you got for it, i got mine for 180USD, I wonder if i overpaid. lol
Mine was 114, but sold as having a slightly loose focusing ring; I found it not to be any worse than most other lenses that age, and it is a good performer. Got the metal lens hood too, which I recommend if you don't have it, to keep contrast (already on the low side) up.

Hmm, yep will get the hood. I was wondering which camera did u use the 24mm on for your previous posts?
