Help me chose Nex5 or X100...

it's an auto focus camera with one lens only and a good sensor.

by most accounts MF is not well implemented.

the nex will shoot all your old glass and do the dishes besides.

if we ever get the promised color focus peaking, it will be even better.

not really fair to include good glass in the price, since that is just money in the bank.

The X100 is as close as possible to what I want in a digital around-town camera,
EXCEPT I've read it ONLY has zone manual focusing, not true manual focus, so this is a deal-breaker for me. Close but not cigar, and its killing me!

As others have said, they are really very different cameras in design and execution. Reports on "x works better than y" are really reports on the users' bias for one type of system over another.

NEX Likes: huge adaptability with lots of lenses, nice sensor size (although not as nice as FF).

NEX Dislikes: no viewfinder (had to adapt one with rubber bands and an aftermarket Hoodman loupe viewer); too small (doesn't really sit easily on any tripod I own); personally I go for actual dials rather than software based controls accessed through a screen. This is a problem for me on all digi-cams however.

The biggest difference between the cameras is one-lens vs. many factor -- the NEX is really much more flexible in this regard. If one lens suits your style and the one on the X100 happens to be "it" for you, why not give it a try? For me though, if I could only have one of the two, I would choose the NEX.

:bang: i just noticed this, if there is a mod that would move this to a more general area i would be very thankful.

I am still not really sure abut the cameras, financially i have a gut(and bank account) feeling that I will be sticking to any of these at least till the end of 2011-mid 2012, maybe just in time to get in line for the 5d MKIII 🙄, or i will see the light and get my Lubitel repaired and be done for...

The NEX is fantastic for manual lens shooting. There is a button dedicated to manual focus magnification, and an expected firmware update is coming soon for focus peaking, which will be a game changer. I set my camera to M mode, and use the lens aperture ring for aperture control, the back dial for shutter speed, and the big C button for ISO. Works great.

I really think you need to handle them both. Just knowing the features and such isn't enough to know whether you'd enjoy using the camera.

I spent a bit of time at B&H, when i thought i might be interested in the various m4/3 cameras. I handled all of them, especially the ones that had garnered such rave reviews.... But, i didn't like any of them. The camera that felt best in-hand and operated as i would have wanted was the Samsung NX10!

More recently, i tried the NEX 3 and 5, and warmed up to them, as well, but had i bought something based on the opinions of other people, i would have been sorely disappointed. I would even sacrifice certain features in favor of the whole 'tactile' and operational qualities issue.

The recently leaked, supposed Firmware 4 for NEX showed a focus peaking function. It essentially paints the in-focus areas with color on the live view LCD screen (there are color and strength choices.) This has been used in digital video for a while to attain manual focus easily, and it will make manual focusing with NEX very fast...maybe even rangefinder fast.

Rumor says that we'll see it next month, but who knows??

I have not said one bad thing about X100, plus I actually got NEX3 while waiting for X100. Never got X100, will consider X200 when all the bugs are worked out and maybe when I can try it in store..
I was just responding to "junk lens" comment, which irritated me and turns out not only me..
At the end of the day, it's the image that matters, and those "junk lenses" are perfectly capable of making great gallery-quality image.

Cool, Sony Rumors says June 3rd the firmware will be online.

Haven't used an X100, but here is one limitation I've found with the Nex: exposure bracketing range is minimal: +/- .7 EV with one above, and one below.

Note that this is when taking a burst. The normal single shot EV range is wide, like +/- 2EV, and the in-camera DR merge is from +/- EV 1 to 6 or so.

Probably not an issue for most, but would have been nice it extended out a bit.

I do wish the NEX's single shot EV range was at least +/-3EV, because I like to use spot metering in M mode to check the metering of various things, and 2EV is pretty limiting.

Just wanted to drop in and thank you all a lot, I managed to handle a NEX 5 with a 35mm Zeiss lens on it today. A tourist from Slovenia saw me with my AFD and came to talk, wow compared to the AFD its a tiny camera... First off i like the handling and the idea of holding the body as a TLR, the screen was a surprise where i had problems with my iphone4 retina this screen was just superb.
Unfortunately gave the purchase a lot of thought and will have to disappoint most of you, since i started this topic i have contacted the shop i was planning for my relative to stop by and purchase the camera of my choice and learned of an great offer on a Pentax K5 (a camera I did handle and was quite fond of ) and a DA 21 AL Limited lens for 1100€ that were used as a demo kit. 😱 With that in mind i think i am just going to hurry up finishing my M3 project for my street photography and go the K5 route, and politely and silently wait for the new offerings on the CEVIL market... Oh and did I mention that i probably have a stack of old Pentax lenses from my dad ?
