I have seen a lot of strap discussion here, and it's been fun to read and see what others are using. I need some help finding the right strap for me.

I'm looking for a strap that can support a large SLR (D3S size camera). I don't want any black rapid type sling that utilizes the tripod hole, and I hate grippy stuff on a strap. I carry my camera on my hip, sling style (over the neck and shoulder) and like to grab and rotate it into place to make a photo, so I want a basic strap that is long and will slide along my clothing without grabbing.

The ideal would be flexible, smooth, leather--about 1" wide--and long. I figure something in the vicinity of 48" lug to lug would be ideal.

Any thoughts?

Maybe a Gordy sling strap?

You can get that with a connector that doesn't use the tripod socket.

Gordy makes great straps!

i'd ask luigi if he could do a custom job. i don't think there are any 1'' leather straps without a grippy backing.

There's a very simple Tamrac strap (http://www.amazon.com/Tamrac-Leathe...8&qid=1387667522&sr=8-1&keywords=tamrac+strap) that has a one-inch nylon strap, and a leather pad sewed on at the center. I buy these, slit all the stitches on the pad and take off the leather. You're left with a wideish, medium soft/hard nylon slippery strap that doesn't have a pad, is very comfortable, can be wound around the wrist for one-hand carry, and extends to 50". My Nikon D300 feels just right on it.

I've been using a 60" Lance strap on my M7. It's been pretty close to ideal, and I've gone through a LOT of straps recently trying to find the right one. I have the classic non-adjust (polyester) but you can also get a leather version. It's great because:
1) it's light
2) doesn't get in the way (meaning the material isn't stiff)
3) 60 inch length means I can sling it over my hip
4) doubles as a hand strap by looping it around the hand a few times. because it's not stiff it's very comfortable as a hand strap.

It's not 1" wide but it's very solid, inspires a lot of confidence. I'm pretty sure it would hold a D3 style body with no problem (the link below shows that they test with a 30 lb load). The only concern I might have is that there's no neck padding, I'm not sure if you'd want one with a D3 (not an issue with an M though).
