I purchased what I thought was a really nice IIIc upgraded to IIIf off *bay and excitedly went out today and shot my first roll. Please look at the attached photo. I assume that I've got holes in the shutter curtain? If not, what is the problem?

Just kidding. I've never seen anything like that before, but I'm going to take a WAG and say you're probably right. Weird looking, sorry you're having the trouble!
Take the lens off and inspect the curtains. If they are dried/cracked, I would expect patterns like this. I had a Nicca like this- curtains "creased" and the holes in the curtains lined up. Other possibilities- shutter is not "capping" when you are advancing it, just lets in little peeps of light.
Either way- inspect the curtains, advance the camera with the lens off.

if you have a cloth shutter on your rf camera, I would say pin holes in your shutter curtains.

Not so new now.
Yes, you need shutter curtains. Not an expensive proposition at all. Try Youxin Ye.
You could, I suppose, do the goop trick others have done, but really, your curtains are likely 50+ years old.

You have the dreaded dry cracked shutter curtain disease. The rubber coating has gone south and won't be back.
You'll need new curtains installed or you could contact the seller for a refund or partial refund for the cost repair..

Thanks for the replies...upon closer inspection I can see some wrinkles in the curtain when the shutter is cocked...so off to Sherry it goes.
Problems aside, this is my first LTM Leica...what a fun little camera to shoot with!!
BTW, the seller has graciously offered to pay to repair.
Appreciate everyones help.

And look what it's done to your truck !
My III-f (s/n 600xxx) does the same "sparkly-alien" thing... particularly when shooting towards the sun. At first I was blaming a marked/dirty Summicron for the flare, then I tried the same lens on another body, and it had been just fine... I then noticed how crackly the curtains are in the III-f; they have gotten worse as I shot several rolls through the camera.
A couple of the regulars here have suggested that the immediate post-war period was not a good one for things such as chrome and shutter curtains, due to material quality issues...
I have (2) black III's, a black II (D), and a chrome III (1934), all of which seem to have original and intact curtains... the black cameras all have sluggish shutters, but the blinds are light-tight...
I need to send my III-f out for CLA and new curtains; the flash sync is erratic too...
