Canon LTM Help! Naming This Canon RF

Hello Im New to the RF's and new here. I have been looking for some answers about my old Canon? 😀 AND SO FAR THIS PLACE ROCKS


1. What year? ------------------- > IT'S A 1951-1952
2. What She Worth? --------------------- > IT'S WORTH ABOUT $200.00 BONES
3. And Most inportant what model? ------------------------ > IT'S A IVF

All IN ABOUT 3 HOURS, NOW WHO WANTS IT?????

Here are A few, 😱 yeah right a few differnt names people have givin me for my Canon RF need some real info on it.

IS IT A CANON AHHHHHHHHHHHHH NONE OF THE BELOW IT'S A IVF

• 1.Ivbs
• 2.Ivbs2
• 3.Leica screw mount. (i know it not this one)
• 4.Range Finder Leica COPY. ( look at the serial #5 Digits. A Repo I dont think so )
• 5. LTM
  
• 6. Rangefinger VI-T, VI-L VI-P
• 7.& finally Rangefinger IV-S2, II, III, IV.

So OK i get it it a Range Finder but come on so this could be 10 different models.
My fault my hassle!

On old Canons, it is very helpful to have the shutter speed sequence and also the split between the top-mounted shutter high-speed dial and the front-mounted slow-speed dial. I can't see this info from the pictures provided.

From the pics, I can see that it has the side-mounted flash bar, which is a common feature of the IV series models. It is definately not the VI or 7 series- completely wrong for this camera. Also, highest shutter speed of 1/1000 or 1/500 is important. I would have to have more info, and access to Peter Dechert's Canon RF book, to make a positive ID.

I imagine that someone will chime in soon.

You need a copy of Dr. Dechert's excellent 'Canon Rangefinder Cameras' book, which includes a flow chart that leads you to the model designation based on several identifying keys.

I don't have my book here in the office, and some of your photos aren't close enough to see all the identifying keys, but:

-- It's got a one-piece lever for the finder magnification control (under rewind knob.) This marks it as one of the later models.

-- There's a film-type reminder in the wind knob. This narrows down the choices.

-- It's not clear from the photo, but it looks as if there is NOT a black pointer on the inner hub of the shutter-speed dial; this means it can't be a "b2", as in IVSb2. The pointer allowed setting the shutter speed either before or after the shutter was cocked; this refinement appeared only on the last series. (The Nikon S2 has a similar pointer.)

-- It does have a sync rail on the end, so it's got to be one of the flash-synchronized models (F or S.) Can't tell which without a close-up of the shutter speed dials.

So, I'd say it's either a IV-something or a II-something, depending on whether the top shutter speed is 1/1000 or 1/500 (again, can't see the dials to tell.)

Don't get in too big a sweat if you find it doesn't match any model exactly. As also pointed out in the Dechert book, some of the identifying keys (e.g. the film-type reminder) are easy to switch from one camera to another, so anyone with enough cameras and a screwdriver can mix and match parts to make trivially different, undocumented "sub-models" that never existed on the factory books!

It's an IV series - but I can't see enough details to know which.

Condition is a factor in price, and hard to judge, since we don't know it's mechanical shape, etc. But the IV's usually go for between $100-200 US, depending on model and condition.

To further add to the confusion, it appears that the lens mounted on your camera is actually a Leitz Summarit 50mm f1.5. So, it's a Canon camera with a Leica lens.

Hi,

It is a model IVS.

The serial #76763 is surrounded by model IVS on my database. The slow speed dial is split at 25, top shutter speed of 1000, has a side rail flash. This camera was produced between 4/1952-5/1953 and would approximate that this one was released around December 52. Only 4900 units were produced as per Peter D's book. Probably came with a CANON LENS 50mm f/1.8 and at the time the CANON LENS 50mm f/1.5 hadn't been released although it wasn't far from the date when this camera was issued. Hence the Leica f/1.5 lens.

One other reason that it is more than likely that it is a IVS is that the serial number range of the IVS went from #64000 to #85000 while the IVF went from #52610 to #69000 and this body is outside that range.
