Hi everyone i'm a new member and recently opened up a "refurbished" FED 2 i got from hero4g on ebay. it was having typical shutter problems, i find out that the curtains are almost coming off the glue was gone. i re-glue and put it together except i may have stripped one of the tensioning nut. i didn't realize it was crooked. i was able to take it off but every time i try to put it back it goes crooked. maybe the first curtain has been stripped... help?

You've not positioned the tapes correctly on the crooked blind. You'll need to re-attach them in the correct place, probably one tape but possibly both. The shutter-drum end of the curtain and the tapes at the same end must be placed exactly correctly for the shutter to work properly. The other ends, at the tension rollers, simply need to be "square-on" and not in a specific position.

ok, what do you mean by reattach? reglue the tapes on the tension rollers? im having trouble also keeping everything tight between the tension rollers ad drum. is there a technique to do this correctly?

Yes, you need to remove and re-glue the tapes in the right position. It's a little difficult to tell which tape you have got wrong. Actually, unless your pictures are deceiving me, the whole shutter does not look right. In the first photo, the right-hand curtain looks to be behind (i.e. nearer the film rails) the left hand one. This is incorrect. Also, the two metal laths should both be visible at that position and they aren't

Have a look on this site:

He goes into some detail on curtain replacement. It's not the exact same camera but the shutter works the same way.

As far as I can see, from those photos, you have the curtains and tapes in the right way. As long as they are positioned on the drums correctly and the tapes are equal lengths, all should be well. Don't forget to position the restrictor gear correctly too, of course.

I don't know what I'm doing. I'm so frustrated, is there any installation steps? I've scowered the web!

hero4g normally pays to have a camera shipped back to him for repairs as part of his warranty coverage. Have you contacted him about this? I buy all of my FSU cameras/accessories from him, and have never had any troubles with faulty gear, but have always found it comforting that it would not cost me anything if I ever had to get him to make a repair.

Even now that the camera is in pieces, I am sure that if you emailed Andrey, he would be happy to guide you through the repair. Or just send it back to him (at his expense) so he can make it right.

Fellow Canadian!
I would have sent it back but I leave for Europe in 4 weeks and don't think I'll get it back in time. I also feel like its a simple procedure since everyone else is able to do it easily. I feel like I need to fix it myself since I messed it up. :/ I will ask hero4g for assistance though thanks for the advice Glen.

Click the link in my post above and study what you find there. Jay's site is very good and covers all you need to know about the shutter. Your camera may be a FED 2 but the shutter works in exactly the same way and really only differs in trivial ways.

If you did not know how to re-assemble this camera, it may have been a bit unwise to dismantle it. Hopefully, you can sort it out, one way or another.
