Canon LTM Help, new canon P owner, camera has problem :'(

Hey guys, i just bought the canon p i was talking about, its amazing, beautiful ect. everything is perfect... except one thing, it squeks when i cock it to take a photo. I have opened the back while advancing the film and i think it is the shutter sliding accross. Please help i am getting really distressed

I have one that does this- no effect on operation.

A Clean-Lube-Adjust would take care of it, typically ~$130 or so. Essex camera in New Jersey and other shops can take care of it. These are 50 year old cameras. It's a matter of your comfort level.
 
It has been my experience that in this model a squeak when advancing the film/cocking the shutter is typically indicative of the need for a CLA (clean, lube and adjust). I had one recently done by Mark Hama and it works very well now. As an aside when they start to squeak a lot of times the shutter starts capping at 1/1000th. That is to say ths shutter does not open or at least open fully. Hope this helps.

is there any know way i an fix it as i have spent most of the money i have buying the camera and then paying 30 percent tax to get it into the uk...
 
I have 4 different Canon's (L1/P/7/7s) - they all squeek a bit. The L1 the least, followed by the P and the 7. The 7s is quite loud. Not effect on function at all. As time goes by I will service the noisy ones - unless frequent use will cure it. Canon's had a tendency to elicit a lot of "mechanical" noise, compared to the Leica's/Nikon's. I suspect partly due to the shutter mechanism.
Just use it until you have amassed the money to service it. Great cameras too. Finders are quite sophisticated compared to the "other" Rf's.
 
A squeak could be an indication of a lack of lubrication and be caused by metal-on-metal contact.

Ed Trzoska in Leicester on 0116 2674247 is cited frequently by classic camera author Ivor Mantanle as one who handles older cameras.
 
If you can spare the money I would really advise you to have the camera cleaned and lubed by a camera technician. I have just gotten a camera back from a CLA and although it was in quite a good shape when I sent it in, it is now absolutely perfect! It just sound and feels better, shutter makes a nice tsk-tsk-sound. Also, if the mechanism is dried out, your shutter speed times may be off, which could mean you won't always get properly exposed pictures.
