Hi,

I just received an Olympus OM-2n bought from eBay and, unfortunately, there seems to be a problem with the split screen focusing mechanism and I can't get the lines to align at infinity. Does anyone have any idea if this is an easy fix? The camera looks great and I would like to keep it but if I have to send it out to have it repaired at my own cost, I am not sure it is worth it.

Thanks!

Try to take the screen out and put it back in again. Push the screen's frame up (I use a pencil or tooth pick), until you hear it click. Be careful not to scratch or touch the screen.

That could be one problem. The other one could be the lens mount, or the lens (I had a couple of Zuikos that overshot infinity).

That being said, all OM2n bodies have to be CLA'ed anyways, to remove the prism foam. So you might as well do this right away.

Roland.

Thank you, Roland. This Olympus has already been CLA'd and had the foam removed, which is why I would like to keep it if possible. I have been in contact with the seller and he believes it might be the lens rather than the focusing screen. Just to clarify, the lens does not overshoot the infinity mark. It stops at infinity but short of the split screen lines aligning for far away objects.

I have another lens on the way so I will see whether or not I have the same problem with both lenses. I don't have the camera in front of me so I can't check the focusing screening but I will do that as well later today.

The OM-2 screens are interchangable. Is it possible it was installed wrong? Either that or just buy a new screen.

However, it's tough to imagine something wrong with the screen itself, which would lead one to consider worse senarios.

There usually is a small screw that will allow you to make fine adjustments to the angle of the mirror.

This happened with a Contax 139, and I was able to correct it.

Some cameras have a post that protrudes from the base of the camera.

Most likely, the Olympus has the small adjustment screw, which you probably would gain access to by removing the body covering, possibly on the right side (under the rewind crank). But I don't know this for a fact, as I haven't needed to do this with my OM-2.

Don't remember any adjustment screw for mirror angle in the OM models. The man with the answers is John Hermanson of Camtech. Never cared for split-wedge focusing screens. They never seem to agree perfectly with the plain matte surface focusing. All my OM bodies have the 1-10 matte screen with grid lines.

Just to circle back on this, the problem was with the lens and not the camera. Thank you to everyone who responded.
