Help With Epson 4490

I'm having an unusual problem with my Epson 4490. I used its predecessor model successfully until giving it to my son a year or so ago. Now I cannot remember just how I set it up for scanning film.

My problem is that the FIRST slide, or FIRST frame of a negative strip, will scan to the dimension I dialed in (usually 600x800 since most of my work stays on the net) under "target" but the succeeding frames are usually half those dimensions. In fact, they seem to have no pattern except that they are never the 600x800 I set for the first frame. I generally use 300dpi for the resolution.

I know all the arguments against using a flatbed for scanning film but I have to be realistic about what I can spend on my hobby, and the 4490's all I can afford.

I'd really appreciate someone jogging my memory on what I'm doing...or NOT doing...that's causing this anomaly to occur.

I use the "professional" setting, set the resolutiuon, and leave the other "target" etc. settings alone.

Hi,

I have the same scanner and I use it in the "Professional" mode. After you do the preview scan, you need to make the adjustments each image individually. I start by selecting the size and resolution settings for the image before doing any other corrections prior to making the final scan. I then repeat the process for any other images in the preview that I want to scan. The EpsonScan software will save these settings as long as you leave the film in place and do not make another preview scan. This is true even if you have to shut the computer down because you need to do something else, as long as you don't remove the film or make another preview scan. All you need to do is restart the computer, then restart the EpsonScan program and continue where you left off. Of course I strongly recommend that you let the monitor warm up for 30 minutes first, before making any visual corrections such as exposure, contrast or color balance.
