I just received my MP-3 and it comes with an MP instruction booklet which does not answer all the questions where the MP-3 differs.

I cold-cocked the camera several times to feel the shutter release and naturally the film counter advanced. The mechanical film counter does not reset to 2 frames before zero upon opening the back, like my M-6 used to. Does anyone know how to reset the film counter on the MP-3 to the start position without having to wind and click 40 odd times? I tried flicking the rewind lever before opening the back but that does not work either.

Also, the film speed indicator on the back is very difficult to move around. Any advice here?

Thanks much.

If I am not wrong the MP-3 is a modern hybrid of the M3 and the M2. The film counter in particular is like the one on the M2, where you reset the film counter manually by rotating the dial in the correct position. Personally I prefer this over the M3's automatic reset to two frames before 0, as I set the dial on the M2 three frames before 0.

Enjoy your new (very beautiful) camera!

Thanks very much. That works. I guess the dial was very stiff but it should loosen up after a while.

Pleasure. I was similarly troubled by the film counter when I first got my M2. I think I found the manual somewhere in the internet and it opened my eyes to what now seems obvious.

I always cock the shutter about half way and then set the counter. This disengages the mechanism and makes it easier to set. I believe this was Leicas recommendation on the M2. Anyway that is how I've done it for nearly forty years. Personally I like the M2 counter over the M3.
