"Your first 10.000 photographs are your worst."

Don't make it an issue, folks.. Shoot digital, shoot everything/anything around you and watch your actuation counter.. After a week or two, you may reach 10.000... Easy!

Joke aside how many of us believe that the first 10.000 (or 20.000 or even 2.000) was his/her worst? Was there a certain number of shots or frames worth to print when you began to feel you were better than before? Just frank thoughts please.. 🙂

I hope so, because I still like a photo of my very first negative. I believe it was Tri-X or Tmax

I think if anyone makes 10,000 photos and doesn't have anything good, they probably will give up. 🙂 That said, I make over 10,000 photos every year (that I photograph at least) and still I am just your average person who knows how to make a good photo sometimes. Greatness, I would think, would show way before 10,000 images. I'd have to agree with Paulfish.

Very true.. sometimes I wonder how much my photography has progressed since the '60s.. (no clear evidence so far 😱 )

hcb is actually ahead of the curve because now it is generally accepted that you START being good ("eg. at a world-class expert level) at something AFTER 10,000 hours.

Malcom Gladwell cites the 10,000 examples like the Beatles, Morzart and even sw programmers like Bill Gates.

Of course 10,000 hours does not mean 10,000 photographs. But the basic idea is there...

I think he stated 50,000 hrs as the threshold ;

Either way it's a lot of practice.

P.S. It don't think he mentioned Bill Gates, who never spent much time on any productive activities, it was James Gosling, who deveoped the Java programming language.

Boris, was that taken with a Summar ?

It is a superb image, if that was your first I think that God was putting a carrot in front of your nose to keep you going. ;-)

My first roll of 120 roll-film 50 years ago, yielded maybe four printable images. Technically I've got a bit better since then. On the other hand, last month I managed around 5,000 exposures, technically they are a lot better, but I dont think one of those 5,000 is a cadididate for a portfolio of my best.
