Remove the words "Canon" and "G9" from the camera and replace them with "Leica" and "M9".

Suddenly, everyone would be raving about the "Leica glow" and other supernatural qualities of the camera.

Or remove the words "Canon" and "G9" and replace them with "Nikon" and "S4". Don't forget to have only 200 chrome with black, and the rest just black.

I don't own either camera, but I'd certainly buy a G9 before an M8. With the change leftover, I could pick up a Bessa and a D300...

The Red Sox are better than the Yankees. They've won the World Series twice in the last four years. The Yankees last won in 2000.

I'm with you. I still use my QL-17 and my A-1. And I have an AE-1 that I used for 20 years and just needs a little work.

And I'm still looking for a P or 7 ...

The Canon Photocopier is just TFB to drag around town and do "street" photography!!!

Not to mention, I dated a Canon Sales Rep, and found her to be somewhat uninformed on the office products, but what a rack! We bought.

I'm always careful to stay relevant on these posts. Personally, I'd buy the G9, because the name starts with the same letter as G-String. The M in M8 brings nothing to mind.
 
I'd love to own an M8, but a G9 is more in line with my budget :) A friend of mine has a G9 and I've had a chance to handle it. Pretty decent little digicam.

Sometimes the choice is between Ramen Noodles and orange juice, or Drink of the Gods and a cardboard on the streets.

But many like pie.

I, unfortunately, like pie and Drink of the Gods. Not a good strategy.
 
I suggest actually reading the article, he seems to ultimately dismiss the G9 as almost but not quite there.

I don't quite understand the guy though, he puts that handgrip and big lensmate thing on it and basically now you've got a camera that's the bulkiness of a small DSLR (Pentax K100, D40 etc) but with a smaller sensor and slower speed that he complains about. Although he also mentions leaving the Leica in the hotel room because it's too big and cumbersome.

If I were him, I'd sell them both and get a $600 compact DSLR and go travel. His needs seem pretty odd.
 
As I said, I have the G9 and I also added the grip, because it makes handling the G9 so much more comfortable. The grip is not huge and hardly changes the size of the G9 - the lensmate ring on the other hand does take the size up at least one notch and I am not sure why he thinks it is so essential. I have the Canon equivalet of the lensmate ring, but I only use it when I want to use a filter or I shoot into a ightsourse to avoid vignetting. 95% of the time I use the G9 without the lens adapter.

Fair enough...but it's not just any Jane or Joe who can, casually or otherwise, drop for a new M8 body, particularly if s/he isn't relying on it for pro work of any sort.

You're right, times have changed and doctors have lost their prestige, it really should be "everyone who buys a leica must be a hedge fund manager". Seriously, an M8 is 4x the price of an equivalent DSLR. It's an indulgence geared toward rich amateurs. There's nothing wrong with that but pretending that 4k of disposable income is common is a delusional. A working professional probably couldn't justify this.
