Thought this may be of interest.

Was looking for some Hewes reels and becoming frustrated at the lack of suppliers here in Spain, and the price of SH items on eBay, etc and happily discovered that you can actually buy them direct from Hewes if you contact them via their webpage.

Thanks for the information. I didn't know anyone else offering them besides Monochrom.com in Germany [http://www.monochrom.com/Fotolabor.htm?websale8=mono-c&ci=001262]. Good thing about Hewes reels is that you only need to buy them once in your lifetime and you never need any other reels.

Unless you mix them up with your old crappy reels and accidentally throw them out. Hopefully no one else will do that.

It's worth noting that they say they'll make custom-sized reels to order - just the thing for the 127 revival.

(I love Hewes reels - managed to snag half-a-dozen new-old-stock 35mm reels from eBay for £20, which should have me set for life if I'm careful 🙂)

Hews reels are the best. They do seem to last forever. Not many things are made to that standard any more.

I have decided to get some more to develop 2x 135 film in a 120 Kindermann tank rather than one at a time in the smaller tank....

I got my previous ones from Monochrom too (I love Monochrom).... had I known you can buy direct from Hewes I would have saved myself about half the price!

I wonder if anyone here has used their spiral film loaders? Any good?

Damn, those reels are so expensive. I'm glad I used the Paterson system. Both have pro's and con's, but price is definitely a pro of the Paterson system. You can buy second-hand reels for like 3€ everywhere and those are just fine. I doubt I'll ever need any more though. I've probably got around 30-40...

If you have 30-40 plastic reels, have you spent more on plastic reels then you would have with 1-2 Hewes reels? They're not expensive, just a higher initial one time cost. When I was using plastic I had to occasionally replace the reels - no matter how much I scrubbed those things there was always a buildup of chemicals and stuff. Eventually they had to be replaced. My hewes reels will still be processing XX long after I'm gone.

Not to mention the long term cost savings on chemicals using a metal tank.

I always hated the Paterson system. Tried them and sold'em. The tanks take more chemistry than is required and no matter how hard I rapped the tank, I kept getting air bubbles while developing. Steel reels and tanks are wonderful. Easy to load, clean, and never any air bubbles.

I prefer the Hewes reels with the SS tanks because they are easier and quicker to load/use and you need less chemicals, but I do think the Paterson plastic tanks maintain temperature stability better., anyway this is a thread about buying Hewes reels so perhaps someone could start a separate one if they want to compare.

I always prefer quality over quantity so been tempted by those as well, but not much info which tanks they fit and if possible to use the tank on the room light (i.e. most tanks needs central core tube to avoid light leak into tank while opening the chemical filling lid - there's no info what core tube fits the metal reels)

Which thanks do you guys use those Hewes reels in 35/120/220 roll formats? Do they fit into Jobo tanks and fit their core tube correctly?

I think they sell a special version for the Jobo tanks with a wider core.

I've got some Durst tanks which are plastic but take standard Hewes SS reels. The best of both worlds.

Now can anybody tell me if the Jobo Hewes reels are the same as the regular Hewes? I bought a couple knowing they were Hewes for a good price but since the wire is thicker than my old cheap reels they sit a little taller and when I agitate my film I no longer get the movement of the reels sliding back and forth. Is this a problem?

Correct, no core is needed. A light baffle is part of the top of most steel tanks, which can be plastic tops or metal.

No, not at all.

I have the jobo hewes reels and jobo. They are different than the normal hewes reels, they are thinner wire and they are not interchangable with the normal hewes. I don't see how the normal hewes would fit the jobo at all. The jobo hewes fit the regular jobo core.
