canada post has proved itself worthy of the extra shipping charges and the hexar af arrived with 15 minutes to spare to meet it's before noon delivery promise.

camera is in very nice shape, very clean glass.
it is a bit more hefty that i recall from fondling it in a camera store many years ago.
the lens is so clear i put a uv filter on it. i don't want to be the one to scratch it.
i had a domke strap here so it's wearing that as well.
for film, i only have delta 400 so i'll pop that in and see what 1/250th shutter speed limit looks like in practice.

a bite to eat and then i'm out for the afternoon.

unless you're in a harsh environment, I wouldn't do the filter.

Joe, the comment on the filter is most likely from problems with the lens hitting the filter during autofocusing. KM used to have spacers available to address this problems, but not anymore. If it is a problem in yours, certain slimline filters work ok. I use a regular heliopan filter on mine, on an adapter ring.
 
never thought about the lens hitting the filter, i'd better go look to see if i scratched it up.

so i shot about half a roll before the skies darkened and i started to melt...

it's hard to remember back when i used an autofocus eos with auto everything. this (short) experience with the hexar af was strange, odd, unfamiliar and i instantly started thinking of selling it.
but i think it will be the perfect camera for some things, like events where i'm asked to participate but maybe take a few shots also. this will allow me to shoot without much effort, and it came with a small flash too so i can do some inside social type shooting.

but the cl is more fun...for a small & quick camera. not that i'm quick to judge ;)

take off the filter, and auto focus to something ridiculously close, I only get about .5mm of filter thread there, on a cold day, that may be like 0.3mm

Also, before using for IR purposes, check on your firmware status.

There are dozens of other things to know about this camera, let me know if you need the manual and I can email, also read everything on the photo.net site, but realize 1/2 or so is dated. It also refers to another site that is down, that author has tarballed the site and given to me, I can ask if I can re-distribute to you, it has images of the top off, etc. if you really get into this.

A free afternoon with a new rangefinder. I can't think of many more pleasant ways to spend an afternoon Joe, sounds great.

Joe, just wait till you see the photos. ;) The Hexar can be as automated or as user-controlled as you want it to be. I never did get into not using the AF, but shooting on M mode is a breeze with the very accurate spot meter (esp with the program/firmware modification).

Give it a chance. At least the image isn't upside-down. :)

Ray,

To use in MF mode, just hit the MF button to toggle to infinity focus (displays 999), then the up/down arrows to manually set distance. You have to be in A or M mode I think when doing this.

Yes, Manual mode does a 4 deg. spot meter read, vs center weighted for P and M modes, just by toggling between P/A and M modes, I'll get an easy 1/3 to 2/3 stop difference in auto speed selection. P mode only uses 5.6 and 11, I think one setting uses f16 (thankfully!), but it makes one wonder about that, are 5.6 and/or 11 sweet spots with this lens?

I just have not found a need to manually focus. BTW, I don't know if you are correct about the P mode. IIRC, it is a function of the minimum shutter speed you set, and the aperture setting on your dial. That is, if I set the minumum shutter speed to 1/15 and I dial in f/4, the camera will use f/4 until it it is bright enough that the needed speed is faster than 1/250, after which it starts stopping the lens down. The opposite happens when light gets low. It shoots at f/4 until a speed slower than 1/15 is required, then it starts opening the lens up.

i have a manual coming, i ordered a reprint from neatphoto off ebay.
i realize there is lots to learn about this camera and i am just starting.

lots of time...
