Hexanon 28mm hood question

Hi all,

since I just bought a nice Hexanon-M 28mm without any hood on ebay, I did some research regarding replacement-hoods.
One option would be a heavystar-hood, but the wide version is not vented. The other option would be a Leica 12589 square hood (for 35mm f1.4 and the 28mm Elmar), which I would prefer. I'm just a bit worried about the fit on the Hexanon. A user on photo.net reported that it fits perfectly.
Does anyone here have any experiences with this?

Nope. My lens came with the factory hood.

Another option would be a hood for the Contax G system 28 Biogon if you can find a black version. Nice because they take a slip-on hood unlike the original vented version for the Hexanon M.

I use a heavystar 46mm wide hood on my M-Hex 28mm. Works well with no light fall-off in the corners. 🙂

That's good information. I bet the 43mm wide hood would work on the 35mm UC-Hexanon also. I could retire the irreplaceable Konica hoods.

Thanks for all the input and ideas.
I will check how the Leica hood can be fixed to the lens. Perhaps with some adjustments to an UV-filter it can be done. I'll report on this once I found it out.

That sounds like a good alternative to my square-hood-experiment.
Do you also use a filter with this combination?

Yes I do Pascal. A 46mm B+W MRC UV filter.

So, today the lens arrived and I borrowed a Leica 12589er hood from one of my fathers friends. Without any adjustments it's quite loose, so I started thinking of a way to fix it firmly to the lens without making it look ugly or even damaging it. After one beer I had an idea. I fixed one layer of a thin isolation tape around the UV-filter. This was just enough to make the Leica hood fit tight. When locked I can even hold the M6 with the lens, holding it by the hood. Even shaking it does not get it loose.
It even looks quite neat - one could say it looks as if they belong to each other.

By the way, is it normal that some inner rear lens looks as if it has some reddish iris-like 2-3mm border when one shines a flashlight on it? It's not on the glas, but seems to be some sort of reflection from the inside. I'm just wondering a bit.

Can't help with the last question. I don't look at my lenses that closely. Afraid I might see something like you did. Then I would loose sleep over it.

I wish I never had a closer look at mine. It was opened before and someone had removed a fungus. The inner coatings are partly etched and there still is an infection in the form of tiny, tiny spots in the lens. Goodbye, Hexanon...

I went to a local specialist for lens repairs who's in business for a long time now. He's quite a character with a database of more than 140000 photos documenting repairs he has done in the past. He had been trained by Konica in Japan and had a Leica dealership in Africa in the past.
First he found the traces of the lens being opened before, then he searched for the reasons of the opening. He found them in a general matte reflection which originated from a light haze inside. It's a typical sign of the lens being exposed to humidity for quite some time, he said. Then he pointed out to me some dark matte reflections in the coatings deep inside. These two spots were the main spots of the cleaned fungus infection. Looking further around he found peeled off paint from a ring which had been tightend too much when someone put the lens back together, then he found some white spots on the inner lenses which looked like more traces of fungus.

Quite a disappointment for me, but at least I can return the lens and get a refund. God, it seems I cannot buy used lenses. I simply have no luck with that. Some months ago I tried purchasing a nice Summicron 50mm.
The first one (of eBay) had a long scratch inside. The second one from a well reputated dealer had an etched surface on the rear lens (it was claimed as A+ condition). The replacement he sent me then had a funky light fungus in the dead center. I bought a brand new Zeiss Sonnar then - the first one had multiple scratches on the front element, the one I have now is ok (I hope).

Well Pascal that's a disappointment but at least you are only out shipping. I bought my 28mm M-Hexanon used from an RFF member. You might want to place a WTB notice both here and over at photo.net.
