Hexanon 35mm f2.0 lens on RD1s

A few people were interested to see shots from the Hexanon 35mm lens, so I thought I'd post these Christmas snapshots. I'm very happy with this combination. All of these are wide open at f2.0, ISO1600 with the camera set +1 stop of exposure compensation.

Very nice results. Number 3 looks very sharp. How does the 28 compare? I have the 50 F2 and will pick up the 35 and 28 if they ever turn up.

Nothing for noise reduction, apart from what Capture One does automatically. I think the key to low noise at ISO1600 is to set the +1 exposure compensation (a trick I picked up from this forum).

I've not yet had much time with the 28 because it's more of an outdoor lens for me and Christmas has been largely an indoor affair. I'll get to playing with the 28 more in the new year I think. My brief tests show it to be blisteringly sharp and relatively high contrast. The 35 and 50 feel like the same sort of lens, the 28 feels.... different.

The 28's are usually readily available. The 35 almost never comes up and is snapped up very quickly.

I have the 28 and it's a wonderful lens. It's fairly compact, built quite well and produces excellent pics.

The 28mm, 50mm, and 90mm are available now on eBay from Matsuiyastore in Japan. A very reliable seller. Alas, no 35mm, though. I want one, too! I have the 28, 50 and just ordered the 90. They make great pics.

Thanks Bob. I'm keeping an eye out for both the 28 and 35. I almost went for a 90 recently, but I already have a fairly new Elmarit 90 2.8. If I could get the 28 and 35 then I'd probably have to get the 90 and the 21/35 to complete the set🙂

I find that the R-D1's meter tends to underexpose by about 1 stop, so +1 is a good idea in general and makes for better exposed pcitures.

I be confused...

What is the difference between ISO1600 & EI+1 and simply setting ISO800?

OK shoot me if I'm wrong but here's my understanding, spoken as though it was gospel truth, but probably riddled with mistakes...

The RD1s underexposes by default to preserve highlight details. Underexposure always results in more noise, especially in the shadows, IF you try to brighten the image after it has been taken. The ISO setting affects the (analogue) voltage to the sensor, which affects the sensitivity of the sensor to light. By setting ISO1600 you're making the sensor as sensitive as it can be. If you set ISO800 with no exposure comp, you're running the sensor in a less sensitive mode (which reduces noise), but then you have to compensate for the underexposure with your RAW processing software (which increases noise).

In other words, I believe you're trading the digital noise caused by adjusting an ISO800 image in software for the analogue noise caused by using a higher sensitivity on the sensor.

As I say this could be completely wrong, but I'm happy with my results 😀 I'm sure this could be "tested" but I'm done with tests for 2006 (and 2007 and 2008...)

I like your mini self portrait in the Christmas tree ball in the color shot. If you can isolate and enlarge the section it might be a neat avatar shot for the next holiday season.

Great photos I love the B/W shots and if I didnt have my 40mm Cron I may have been tempted by the Hexars myself .Nice to see young childen enjoyng christmas without a load of electronic toys ( unlike us older folk)I must try this 1 stop exposure technique sometime.Thanks for sharing.

I have exactly the same kit! It is terific. I almost sold the 35mm hexanon to support a 35mm Biogan because the 35mm hexanon flares easily. besides this, it is a great lens.
I am glad I didn't sell it!
