Hexar AF AE/AF lock

On the Konica Hexar AF camera, is it possible to separate the AE lock and AF lock functions? I've read that they are both activated by 1/2 depressing the shutter button, but can they be locked separately? You don't always want the focus point to be the metering point, and vice versa, of course.

You cann't Tonal1. Unless you use manual exposure like P. suggest.
This and the 1/250th shutter limitation are the only weaknesses of
the AF, IMO.

You can, you can: depress 1/2 way the shutter button to prefocus and then, like a fiddler, use another finger to press MF in order to lock the focused distance. At this point aim whereas you want catch the exposure and depress 1/2 the shutter button to lock AE, reframe and shoot.

you see, my entrance level minolta af slr HAS separate focus and exposure lock buttons.
But we all like to praise rangefinders.
Oh wait, the hexar ain't even a rangefinder. 😀

Forgive me if you know these work arounds already:

- you can focus and while you focus push "MF". This will lock the focus. Then you can re-compose and shoot using a different (i.e. automatic) exposure.
- or in Manual mode, you set the aperture and can read the time for correct exposure when pushing focus half way. Then you can set the time manually. Or read the settings in P/A mode and use exposure compensation.

Basically if you depress the af button halfway you lock the exposure.
This strategy is therefore the golden tip in order to use ael ( and almost finally we could use slide film on the hexar af)
The second way would be to just preset your focus distance with the plus and minus buttons of the camera and use halway press to AEL.

Then lastly it would be good to know that the cameras light meter is not spot but averaged over almost the whole frame of your shot. My experience with slide film is that it is faster to compensate exposure per shot ( overexpose with bright skies snow etc) than to use AEL.

That's one way.. you can also do it the other way round in M-Mode, and you've got spot metering to boot:

1. select aperture in M-mode.
2. partially press shutter release button.
3. display shows proper shutter time.
4. press UP or DOWN, and that time is selected. This allows for a very quick spotmetering AE lock.
5. let go of the shutter button
6. aim and press shutter halfway for focus
7. recompose and shoot..
