Hexar AF pics: share the joy

There is something about the Hexar that abides. A great tool for 35mm expression.

One of my favs

I bought the AF through a friend, who subsequently hunted one down again after missing it. I highly recommend this camera if you are looking for a quick, convenient and high quality output camera. Its fast, light and packs easy.

Buy it.

Hexar AF:

Mine had a triangular cutout on right side of film gate. I wonder if they all did?

Yeah, that's a hallmark of Konicas. AFAIK, all Konicas have that. My Hexar and my Konica SLRs had it. Contrary to everybody else here, I never got along with mine. It was so quiet I could never hear when a shot was actually taken, and I didn't like the viewfinder. If I remember correctly (it was about ten years ago), there was some sort of cross pattern in the viewfinder, like a rifle scope. The lens was great though, reminded me of a Summicron. Mine underexposed, which added to my frustration with it. Your mileage will undoubtably vary...

Thanks Simon, means a lot coming from you, love your portfolio!

It is fairly easy to change mid-rolls on the Hexar AF, you'll hear a click then have about 2 seconds to open the back before it fully winds the roll.
Had to change rolls a couple of times when I had only Gold 200 and Delta 400@1600 with me.
ND filter is another easy way for sure

Thanks Earl.

The mid roll change is another useful feature that had me thinking about the Hexar as a possible film camera addition/replacement. Perhaps I can leave my film leader extractor at home once I find a decent camera - I've always struggled with those things😱🙂

Thanks for adding your shots Taipei, between you, Earl & Harry its good to see some colour examples. Though none of these are really helping with a GAS attack....so I'll call it all essential research or knowledge mining 😉

Interesting to hear so many of you (and others from different sources) suggesting quite how much they missed this old 'point & shoot' once they'd sold it or moved it on. A lesson perhaps, don't get rid unless you absolutely don't get along with it...like Dirk (good to hear an honest contradiction come up too.)

Helen - I'd be willing to place a sizeable bet that your new ME will keep you pleased for a long time yet but, a bit like you, the Hexar has always been one I've wanted to try.

Speaking of actually buying one, it seems many of the examples I've seen for sale are the chunkier data back versions, are these exactly the same as the other with just some extra body thickness? I also assume, never having owned a data back camera before, that you don't have to use this facility e.g. it can be switched off?

Hi Simon. Yes the dateback models have a little extra thickness because of the dateback, which has an off feature. I'd likely never use the date on negs.

Otherwise the cams are completely the same (though there are differences between black, silver, rhodium etc)

My Silver Hex is non date, but I think the US models were with date. The Cameraleather green leather skin I ordered had cut outs for the dateback because that was the only version Morgan knew of at the time.

The earlier black models have more "rubbery" feel to grip because of their finish. They look great in black, and the silver looks a little more classic to me.

good luck with your decision.

Thanks for the info John.

I'm struggling to find many for sale, all you lucky buggers are holding on to them😀

I very briefly had one, it had a fault that lead to its demise, I think I only got a couple of rolls of film through it, but they were lovely shots.

I have both Contax T2 and T3s now, whilst the Hexar is a different experience and I miss it, I can't really complain about my current set up.

going through my travel pics from last month, here's a V700 scan of Provia 100f taken by the Hexar.
Seriously impressed by the lens on this camera!
This is most likely at f/5.6 or f/8

Obviously a lot depends on the film stock (looking at your Provia shot and FalseDigital's Kodak Gold shot particularly here) but I'm impressed by the way the lens appears to give the colours plenty of punch whilst still appearing naturally muted as opposed to the "Full Velvia/Digital" look.

I'm curious to know whether I'll be buying some colour film stock in the future, I've been pretty much a full time monochrome user in my personal photography.
