Hexar AF & variable ND filter?

Don't know about the EE, but I doubt it would be possible for a different reason in that metering would become an issue (unless you were using the variable ND on it's darkest setting so you knew how many stops to compensate for - or used an external meter to guage the light loss at the filter's various settings - unfortunately none of the ones I've seen have the light reduction in stops calibrated on the scale). This could be an issue due to the Hexar's not TTL exposure metering.

The EE lens error comes from the lens AF motor meeting too much resistance, and doesn't have anything to do with the optical properties of the filter. If the filter mount is such that the lens can't bang into it when focusing, the lens error doesn't occur. Some filters stay clear of the lens, others don't. There used to be a fix available from Konica (a washer behind the outer barrel) that allowed use of almost any filter.
