Thanks Mango.
A few more: any limits on defenders in the box? And are players carded only if it's deemed to be an intentional foul?

In the box a foul by a defender automatically gives the attacker a free kick.dadsm3 said:Thanks Mango.

Also, the goalkeeper has some special rights in his box (the smaller one immediatley around his goal), meaning some protection against over-eager attackers when it gets crowded.

Thanks Andy, looks simple enough and just saw it clearly played out in the game....but it must be very difficult to call as a linesman/referee unless you're directly in line with the second last defender, especially if the ball is high in the air over the second last defender's head. So I guess the offside official follows the second last defender up and down his side of the field, and stays in line with him?
dadsm3, it seems the off sides trap in soccer is the equivalent to the neutral zone trap in hockey as far as being a defensive strategy.

Rover: &^%*%$#^ cheaters in every sport! oops, 3-0 Czechs, would have screamed offside!, but now that I'm an expert saw another guy there just out of the play....who predicted 4-0? Hope it doesn't get embarrassing....
Czechs always have good teams, they're good at hockey too....

That was a pleasant game to watch. I was rooting for the Czechs. 3-0 and three very nice goals! Bummer Koller is out, as ugly as he is, he knows how to score... USA were definitely very good at playing out the offside trap, but then again all boring teams are

The USA need a few good wins and to progress into the final rounds, maybe that would generate more interest back home. Unfortunately in the US they are taught from cradle to grave that winning is everything. That was also evident in their team today, as soon as the second goal went in their heads dropped and there was no sparkle in their game. The last twenty minutes was like watching a team play football by numbers.
They need to realise it is possible to come back from, and win, a two or three goal deficit. Witness Liverpool FC in Europe. Three goals down at half time and came back to 3-3 at full time and won the championship on penalties.

Andy, when I see replays on the sports channels here the British league seems to have quite a few 4-3 games, while on the continent they seem to play more defensively...is this the case or just my perception? It's tough for newbies to watch defensive struggles.....

I like the scoring....but I'm shallow.

Well, those Rules of Association Football did not explain the difference in when an indirect free kick and a direct free kick are awarded. That is, what results in an indirect free kick, and what results in a direct free kick. Anyone know?
Three-nil, Czechs. I'm thinking the USA comes away with one win (3 points), tops. I saw none of the game; were the Czechs just that much better? I would not be surprised. Koller is injured?

Thanks! Actually, no, I was never sure -- don't see a lot of "your" football here. "Foul play" is defined as what, being carded? Other than a hand ball, I'm having trouble thinking of what other offense would give rise to an indirect free kick -- can get pretty subjective otherwise.

a hand ball results in a direct free kick as well.
but, for example, when the keeper has the ball in his hands, he can only keep it for a few (6?) seconds, to avoid him winning time for his team. So when a goalie holds the ball for say ten seconds, the other team is (= can be) rewarded an indirect free kick. Just one example...
Ghana vs Italy is looking pretty good so far, especially since Ghana seems to do surprisingly well. Then again, every team that plays versus Italy does well, but in the end the Italians somehow always win 2-0...

Strictly speaking we have many different leagues at many different levels. There is the English FA Premier League, below that are the three divisions of the Football League, below them are the Conference Leagues or 'non-league' divisions comprised of the Conference North and Conference South. Below those are the three regional leagues The Southern, Isthmian and Northern Premier Leagues. Below those are the local divisions...
Scottish football is a lot easier to follow, they only have Celtic and Rangers...
Here is an explanation of the English Football Leagues pyramid.

Thanks for the clarifications on the free kicks.
I'm thinking -- USA team is this summer's version of Bode Miller. Way over-hyped.

No, I won't go that far, not about Bode, he was a wreck, but lets hold off on the final judgement of the soccer team.
