Hi can I use shutter assembly of leica m3 ss or ds to my leica m4?

I echo the sentiments above, I think it's a good thing to learn repairs and there's only one way to work out your limits. I also can't see how you would ruin the camera beyond repair should you stuff it up, so really don't understand this theme amongst members that Leicas are untouchable. They're not. I replaced the curtains and ribbons and beamsplitter on a iiic (not without its problems) and just reconditioned and cla'd an M2. I'm glad I did for what it taught me, even if the repairs are not expert. At least the cameras can take pictures again rather than sitting in a box somewhere.

Main thing is care and patience - lots of deep breaths! Let us know how you get on.

It is a no brainer, tbh, I am learning a lot after few researched since, Leitz Camera knows they have to simplify from there standpoint there new Leica M series prior 20-year + of barnack camera before M system was unvieled, and it is really obvious their ingenuity cool design that is "complex but simple", by checking its mechanism after stripping it, firstly observed there complexity yeah difficult at first, the more you lookin at it, full commitment on the process is the more it becomes so easy to understand.

Yeah I know, I have seen that reaction, that Leica is untouchable, I dont really understand why, but I will just keep it to myself, but I am cool now working on it, helps alot for learning purposes, I AM SAYING THIS, YOU CANNOT RUIN THIS M SYSTEM WHILE YOU ON THE PROCESS OF TEARING IT DOWN, I mean its common sense, the more it is a precision machine in any aspect, you cannot go wrong with it,when putting back and parts all fit together.

This isn’t an old Nikon or Pentax cannibalized to resurrect a dead body. The M3 was designed and built like an old, fine watch. The very late M4, not so much though it did serve as the template for all later film M’s.

Btw in non metered Leica M system you cannot go wrong tearing it down, and putting it back, coz, theyre precise nicely design, if you happened to mess it up, there is something wrong with you, or it is not for you.

What is it "that can touch this leica camera notion is so forbidden? they are just like any other camera with same functionality, operations by its principle mechanically.

Why de-value other brand like this Nikon and Pentax? I mean they're like fine awesome, cool cameras,(btw I am eye-ing on that titanium shutter curtain on that F-F2 too for my M4 hmmmm....sounds good project to me) ok yeah what is the grudge on that? kind of strange...huh?

What you mean M3 is the only old fine watch? All M's are awesome fine made, M4 achieved its function so much in fast shooting,, period!

I think any leica manual from M3,2,4,have close similar to each of other, I can confirm it first hand only few difference on the orientation of improved parts but same functionality.

M3 yeah that 0.92x magnification only thats all ,if doin wide lens , too many external to place on it at that cold shoe, and it becomes so bulky arrrgh...well it is me...

I would just give DAG or Sherry K. a call and ask the question. I suspect the answer is "no," but don't know enough to answer the question, which incidentally, appears to be the case for everyone who has responded so far. That's OK. We are not all expected to know everything.

On the other hand, if the OP is determined to get out the screw drivers and dremmel and find out for himself, I'd be interested in the answer for pure entertainment value.

BTW, I realize this is heresy to some folks, but there is no shame in a simple "I don't know."

Well it is easy for me now after few weeks of tinkering and gently watching my M4 how it works!!!

Leica M4 and other non-metered Ms are the most simple elegant camera of all that other japs camera I have teardown, that’s why this is M is timeless...

No no ah ah, In regards with shutter curtain design from Leica M1-M6 + MDa theyre interchangeable, Theyre not different camera, few parts have this change in design, but still same function(e.g. rangefinder assembly magnification, self timer lever, frame lever, and rewind knob, few screws, and frame counter on M2)

I have fixed many cameras which I have purchased as in trouble. Fixed and sold as working ones. Never had money request for return. Including Zorki cameras with complete re-haul including new curtains cut by my hands.
Once I sold them enough I purchased M4-2. And because of this knowledge I'm not the clueless moron to change curtains on it by myself.

I have messed about with a few zorkis - even though they seemed to work fine, simple things like shutter tension and running on leaving a constant gap between them is difficult to repair without the right tools - let alone replacing the whole shutter mechanism.

Leica cameras are expensive and prices are likely to raise in the future. If you don't have the skills to do it you risk ruin them. Personally I would pass it on to an expert, you might think otherwise.

Well, tools that I am using right now is just as specified flathead screwdriver and an 80 proof Jagermeister.

In my situation I bought it for cheap coz of that issues, but thru research and reading anywhere and maximize all I could obtain to understand what is in it, well it is not that difficult anyway, I felt that I was underestimated because of my powerful question that first ever here, they cannot guess, they’re just mumbling Yoda tadat, but didn’t get any answer, But I am a fair man, maybe that is there only belief and limitations that never question anything, just like dumb down herd, ya know what I mean.
