Hi-end classic SLR with a 40. Nearly unlimited budget. What are my options?

The popular versions date from the 70's and 80's and so there is no way you can be 100% certain but that applies to every film camera as they will all be secondhand now. I've had good ones and bad ones and I choose them carefully. One cost me three pounds, others nearer a hundred but that's no clue as to their future and past.
I like all my SLR's and use them on a rota; at the moment a Canon EOS 500 has film in it and the next one on the rota is an OM-4 but I am stuck indoors for the duration...

Hmmmm, something titanium and with a 40mm lens modified at enormous expense to fit and match it. Sounds fun.

You've just reminded me of my XD7 (in around 1981) which was a lovely camera.
Sadly, it's long gone - but I do have a very nice MX now, as a kind of compensation. 😀

I have a Minolta XD-11 that was overhauled by John Titterington. He is still in business. He sells cameras on Ebay that he has worked on and does repairs.

I have not used my XD-11 in a while because I seem to have more keepers using an auto focus camera these days. Getting old I recon. I really should sell off the MF cameras I don't use.😱
Is there a big difference with the FM3a screen?
Any exposure compensation?
I ordered an FM3a screen for my FE2 that has not arrived yet...
The best answer for you isn't really about the exact camera and exact lens you choose,
but rather the best camera SYSTEM for your purposes.
the Contax, Olympus OM and Konica systems are long discontinued with harder to get parts and repairs.
Nikon and Pentax are still in production.
My own choice would be a Nikon FM3A with the Voigtlander Ultron. The Pentax way is just as good.

It's finer than the standard screen found on an FM2/FE2 and the split prism doesn't black out at apertures smaller than f/5.6 (useful for focusing with DOF preview). No exposure compensation needed.

You can't tell just by looking: I just spent time fussing with an X700 and ended up replacing 3 tantalum capacitors, which are supposed to be the "good" ones.

If you can settle for five millimeters less, the Leicaflex SL with a 35mm is a great combo.

I thought the OM-3 and OM-4ti were discontinued in 2003 but lenses were being made some time longer. It's a good point though but many see the OM's as professional cameras and my very early one (1973) is still going strong.

This version of the Ultron also came in M42 and Pentax K-mount, so a screwmount camera like the Voigtlander Bessaflex might be cool. I'd say it's overpriced, but YMMV. I'd prefer a Pentax LX with the K-mount version. Eric Henderson (pentaxs.com) can repair the LX if you're concerned.
Going back to the Contax 45mm, they had a silver Tessar 100 Jahre edition that looks great. I have no interest in any Contax SLRs, but the Yashica FR1 looks neat.
I have a soft spot for Konica lenses, too, and the FC-1 would be my pick for a body.

I just went out for a wander with my Pentax LX (a beautiful thing flawed only by the tinny sound of the shutter) with my 50mm f1.2 and my 40mm f2.8. The latter is noticeably darker for the viewfinder, and it feels insubstantial in use. Pics for another day. My Ultron is much nicer in use, smooth and well damped, and that extra stop is worth it.

Why the need to modify a CV 40 f2? Comes in Nikon mount.
And the Nikon F2 Titan, F3P, F3 Limited, FM2/T are all titanium cameras.
The thing about the F2 Titan is that there are many fakes out there. Sover Wong's website shows how to spot them.

I use Pentax (SV, MX, LX) and Olympus (OM1n) bodies daily. They are excellent and very much good for every day use. Plenty of technicians around, even in wee little Australia.
