Hi-Matic question

Hi all

Just finished shooting my first roll with the Hi-Matic 7s. Everything seemed to work fine except (and there's always an except) the frame counter stopped counting at 20. The film continued to wind to the end of the 36 exp. roll, just kept saying 20.

Any ideas?

Do you have a doner roll to test with? I actually have to get another one myself. Just a roll of cheap supermarket brand film to run through the camera and take out that you don't have to worry about. See if this is repeated. If it is then make the decision, is it something that has to be fixed, or something you can live with. When you rewind the roll of film, be careful not to wind it all the way into the canister so that you can use it again. mine normally last a few weeks until I start cleaning, and out they go.

After finishing the roll, I dry fired the camera 2 cycles and the film counter stopped advancing at 20. Its no big deal since I normally shoot 24 exp rolls anyway. Just thought it was a strange coincidence that it stop at 20 since that was the common number of exposures on film in 1966. Maybe it was so used to going to 20 it didn't know how to count any higher.

I once had that happen with a Yashica TL Electro X. I bought it off ebay (in great condition, of course) If I recall, it was just that the wheel was binding on some part of the mechanism. I think it was on the increment counter and I just bent it up a bit. I don't know if that will be your case or not, or how easy or hard it might be to take off the top.

On the Yashica it wasn't that hard, and I didn't have any trouble finding the battery check spring on the floor either thank you. It was just a little tricky getting it back together.:bang:

HiMatic 7 lens?

HiMatic 7 lens?

I'd like to piggyback a question on this thread. What is the lens specification for the HiMatic 7? I owned one (when they were new on the market) but can't remember the spec.

For some reason I'm thinking it was a 55mm or 60mm lens, but I may be confusing that with a very old Exacta I once owned. And is the lens f/2.8?

Ah, so it was 45mm f/1.8. I must have been the Exacta that had the slightly-longer-than-normal normal lens.

I kinda wish I still had that Hi-Matic. I sold it to a friend when I went upscale and bought a pre-Spotmatic Pentax H1a...

i have been going ebay crazy and have bought 3 minolta 7s cameras and a himatic 9 also.
my first cost about 22 bucks cdn but now they are upwards of 100 bucks or more at times. it seems that the mid 60's - early 70's rf cameras have exploded in popularity and the prices reflect that.
it's too bad as i would like to get a few more - oly sp, konica auto s3, minolta himatic 7s11 - but these in particular are the most expensive it seems.

i guess if i wait long enough something else will be 'in' and i will be able to get them.

Joe, sounds like you're compiling a fine collection!

I've been more of an acquirer than a collector. The HiMatic is the *last* camera I ever sold. Could never seem to bear to part with them, so over the years cams have wandered into my life like stray cats, and stayed.

I still have that original Pentax H1a. Needs new seals and mirror foam. Just bought a kit so I can fix it up. I shot a roll with it recently and the shutter speeds are still good and the S-T 50mm lens is as creamy as ever. But the mirror sticks up every so often.

I have great memories of that Hi-Matic. Enjoy yours for me too!

I still have my Hi-Matic 9 that I bought in 1969, when I was 11. It was my first 35mm camera, a step above my Instamatic 150. That was a lot of lawn mowing. It still works, of course. It is a great camera.
