These are photos from a two week backpacking trip on and around the Second Southern Section of the Central Range, Taiwan. Typhoon Morakot struck during the middle of the trip. I used a Bessa T, with a kit of ZM 21/4.5, Rollei Sonnar 40/2.8, and Leica Tele-Elmar 135/4 E46 version.

Most of the black and white photos I took during the height of the storm were marked by water stains.

This is a picture of the pond at Dashuiku Mtn (3500m) during day two of the typhoon. Dry before the storm, it had swollen to about 10 times normal size.
The surrounding ground is completely soaked...

The first clearing after the storm, day four.

A mudslide took out a huge section of the trail and necessitated a long foray off trail to maneuver around the slide.

The valley around Lakuyin River (2500m), waters swollen by the typhoon. Because the Lakuyin River was too swollen to cross, we had to take an alternate route along a ridge line that was beautiful but difficult to negotiate.

The lichen obviously were likin' to abundance of wetness brought about by the storm. This was taken handheld at 1/8 sec. under heavy forest canopy.

A riot of color from the lichens...

A tangle of stumps and branches from a tree that fell in a mudslide, around 3400m.

The sunset accentuated colors in the grass at 3000m, the upper reaches of the Lakuyin River. The area was the scene of a US fighter plane crash several decades ago and is strewn with wreckage debris. The bodies of the crew were buried on site. Day five after the storm.

This is a photo of Jiaminghu Lake (3200m), one of the largest high altitude ponds in Taiwan. The Lake had swollen to many times its size but the waters had receded by the time we arrived, six days after Morakot had left.

The morning sun brings out the colors of the arrow bamboo and the rocks.

Here you can just see the wing tips and flame orange jump suits of the rescue helicopter team. It's a long story...

Over 500 persons lost their lives from the storm, along with huge damage in property. The people who suffered most severely were aborigines in mountain villages. Please consider making a donation to help out with the reconstruction. I have.

The Jiaminghu photo is certainly the most photographic of the bunch, while the others are more pedestrian or documentary in nature. Personally, my favorite is probably the Lakuyin River scene, or perhaps the watermarked monochrome of Dashuiku.

Great story and pictures! I also that shot of the river winding through the valley and the Lake shot is gorgeous. Nice exposure!
