I think the above post suggests that us old guys (vintage hipsters) do not have a monopoly on appreciation of retro style and gear.

Lots of old stuff remains either classic, timeless, or simply was the best that ever was, and its appreciation has been extended to another generation.

I can't believe no one has mentioned porkpie hats.

In the 1950s they called us beatniks, in the 60s they called us hippies. Porkpie hats were associated with Lester Young. I was living at the Dante hotel on Columbus street in San Francisco, smoking weed, reading poetry and playing saxophone in the coffee houses and attending the Academy of Art. Somewhere in the last 55 years the term 'hipsters' was redefined at Webster's, unrecognizable by this this old man whose wife calls him, 'decrepit.'

I'm old enough (née 1957) to be amused by the term "hipster." My pet theory for the term's use as an insult is that every generation seems to develop some new aspect of popular culture that they identify as their own. Then, a newer generation comes along and rediscovers or repurposes these artifacts, and the oldsters are offended that what had once been theirs is no longer, and therefore begin to accuse the youngsters of cultural thievery, labeling them as "hipsters."

Myself, I'm glad to see someone half my age rediscover some of the artifacts of my younger days, perhaps they'll do with it better than we did. And as an "oldster," I'm enjoying rediscovering some of the artifacts of contemporary culture, finding it a pleasure for this old dog to learn new tricks from the young pups.

Reminds me of the CEO of a company we done business with, who liked to joke how he always knew the software guys had arrived, when they saw the sportscars in the car park..

Love reading some of these messages. I confess I must fall squarely into the category of hipster (albeit ageing, unfortunately )described above. ATM'd my way to a rolleiflex? Check. Twice! Tight jeans? They're almost jeggings, check. Beard? Every other week or so, which makes it worse, double check. Live in Manhattan? Yup. And I'm a lawyer. Man. But despite all of that, I've been shooting film for 15 years, 2nd great love after my wife. Love my rolleis, and not only because the girls seem to love them. But you wouldn't have a clue why I photograph, or whether my photos are any good, just by looking at me or reviewing my demographic stats. You wouldn't have any basis for passing judgment on me or my motivations. I think the same goes for all the hipsters we like to make fun of. We don't really know them, and how they dress shouldn't make a difference, much less provide a basis for inferring their motivations or "worth". There is a hipster in everyone of us - embrace him (or her).

I saw a hipster with a Rolleiflex TLR once. He obviously thought it was nothing more than a cool retro necklace.

So, based on the way a person dresses, you came to the conclusion that they cannot possibly be using it for photography?
