Don't knock the 'hipsters' - they have been very beneficial to the resurgence of film (they are a demographic unlike us 'gnarly Luddite malcontents').

In the 1950s they called us beatniks, in the 60s they called us hippies. Porkpie hats were associated with Lester Young. I was living at the Dante hotel on Columbus street in San Francisco, smoking weed, reading poetry and playing saxophone in the coffee houses and attending the Academy of Art. Somewhere in the last 55 years the term 'hipsters' was redefined at Webster's, unrecognizable by this this old man whose wife calls him, 'decrepit.'
if you want to go beyond 1950, i would say "bohemianism"
i would identify myself as "bohemian."

When has one crossed the hipster line?
When the "retro" is used purely as a prop for cosmetic reasons. That, and wearing a fedora hat and tight jeans.

For a long while I wondered what a hipster was, but after reading some of this I now don't care ... so well done everyone![]()
Stewart, you are absolutely right. All is as it should be.
I'm old enough (née 1957) to be amused by the term "hipster." My pet theory for the term's use as an insult is that every generation seems to develop some new aspect of popular culture that they identify as their own. Then, a newer generation comes along and rediscovers or repurposes these artifacts, and the oldsters are offended that what had once been theirs is no longer, and therefore begin to accuse the youngsters of cultural thievery, labeling them as "hipsters."
Myself, I'm glad to see someone half my age rediscover some of the artifacts of my younger days, perhaps they'll do with it better than we did. And as an "oldster," I'm enjoying rediscovering some of the artifacts of contemporary culture, finding it a pleasure for this old dog to learn new tricks from the young pups.

Joe, when my daughter was in high school, around 1999, she came home one day extolling praise for this hot new artist that was perhaps the most incredible guitar player she'd ever heard. She HAD to have us have a listen, and she found this hot new artist's album track and played it for us.
My wife and I immediately burst into hysterical laughter when we heard that the track was from an album called "Supernatural" by Carlos Santana!

Well, in all fairness, your daughter probably focused on:

I was in Pusan (Busan) in 1955, roaming the streets and eating kimchi in the drear light of winter. At night I worked on pier 3, unloading food ships for the soldier boys. I'm not old enough to be a bohemian.

Sure, but they only want expired film, don't they?

Hipster = not square
Analog = not digital
It's surprising that no one ever mentions the fact that rangefinder photographs actually look different from photos taken by say an SLR. We have eyes but we do not see. The lens design is different so the image on the film and hence the photo looks different.

Those hats are porkpie hats. The fedora has a much larger brim and higher crown.

Hipsters don't see themselves as hipsters.
Depends how you look and sound like.

There's a social class structure within the Hipster Fauna.

If someone calls you a hipster and you don't care, you probably aren't one.

wow, pier 3? behind the KTX station? that's pretty cool. roaming around now around choryang and the old russian part of town, it's considered run down and talked amongst locals as a definite area of being robbed/ seediness. i wandered there many times and i think it's just their xenophobia kicking up.

In a word perhaps "trendy" is a better term and this includes clothes, fashion and even where you live.

Ha, I had to look up KTX station. There was no KTX then, only huts and dirt roads. Walking from the pier to town, there was no buildings I can recall that was two or three stories. Pictures of Pusan today are unrecognizable by me, there were no tall buildings.
Seediness? No, just ordinary people going about their everyday lives who have no need to look down their noses at those less than themselves.

Posts 222 and 223 are an interesting combination. The first thing that occurred to me when I read them is that Cal aspireth to be hip and Jim has been there all his life. No contest.
