Don't knock the 'hipsters' - they have been very beneficial to the resurgence of film (they are a demographic unlike us 'gnarly Luddite malcontents').
In the 1950s they called us beatniks, in the 60s they called us hippies. Porkpie hats were associated with Lester Young. I was living at the Dante hotel on Columbus street in San Francisco, smoking weed, reading poetry and playing saxophone in the coffee houses and attending the Academy of Art. Somewhere in the last 55 years the term 'hipsters' was redefined at Webster's, unrecognizable by this this old man whose wife calls him, 'decrepit.'
When has one crossed the hipster line?
For a long while I wondered what a hipster was, but after reading some of this I now don't care ... so well done everyone 🙂
I'm old enough (née 1957) to be amused by the term "hipster." My pet theory for the term's use as an insult is that every generation seems to develop some new aspect of popular culture that they identify as their own. Then, a newer generation comes along and rediscovers or repurposes these artifacts, and the oldsters are offended that what had once been theirs is no longer, and therefore begin to accuse the youngsters of cultural thievery, labeling them as "hipsters."
Myself, I'm glad to see someone half my age rediscover some of the artifacts of my younger days, perhaps they'll do with it better than we did. And as an "oldster," I'm enjoying rediscovering some of the artifacts of contemporary culture, finding it a pleasure for this old dog to learn new tricks from the young pups.

My wife and I immediately burst into hysterical laughter when we heard that the track was from an album called "Supernatural" by Carlos Santana!
🙄
if you want to go beyond 1950, i would say "bohemianism"
i would identify myself as "bohemian."

When the "retro" is used purely as a prop for cosmetic reasons. That, and wearing a fedora hat and tight jeans.
Those hats are porkpie hats. The fedora has a much larger brim and higher crown.
I was in Pusan (Busan) in 1955, roaming the streets and eating kimchi in the drear light of winter. At night I worked on pier 3, unloading food ships for the soldier boys. I'm not old enough to be a bohemian.
isnt hipster is something to do with fashion ? clothes ?
wow, pier 3? behind the KTX station? that's pretty cool. roaming around now around choryang and the old russian part of town, it's considered run down and talked amongst locals as a definite area of being robbed/ seediness. i wandered there many times and i think it's just their xenophobia kicking up.
