Thanks dmr & Jan! Now, about grain and dust removal.......
You're very welcome. 🙂
Now about grain and dust removal. I don't really care that much about grain removal. Really. Grain is part of real photography, and the grain really depends on the film. When scanned at full res, my old Tri-X shots show the same kind of grain that a good lab 8x10 would. With Kodachrome, you really don't get much, grain that is. 🙂 I do like the fact that this scanner will show the grain the way it is.
One thing about grain, if you scan at a lower res and try to do a full-size print, you might get a very bizarre grain enhancement due to interference. There's lots written about it if you do a search on the web.
As for dust, this scanner doesn't have ICE. It does have the "Auto Dustbrush" which I really have not had any luck with. I've found the best thing is to watch technique and hygeine and get the negative as dust free as possible, then touch up in Photoshop. I have been doing this at max res, before sizing using a combination of the healing tool (worth the upgrade if you don't have it) and the clone tool.
