Joe, that's a very sharp shot with good contrast, tones and detail. Your Canonet is just the kind of fixed-lens rangefinder that can (as the Blokes say) "take the Mickey" out of a snob with the camera that has mortgage payments. I might also mention that you caught the guitar player is an excellent pose. I like the picture.

Jorge, your picture is also brilliantly sharp. My Sony F-828 digital camera uses a Zeiss lens and I can't say enough about the images it gves me.

Thanks for all the compliments, I really do appreciate them.

Having this camera for about 3 weeks, I think I've taken more good shots per roll of film than any other camera that I've owned. This thing just puts me in the right mindset for taking good pics. Gotta try to stop it down a bit more; I tend to shoot a lot of low-light wide-open shots with 1/15th and 1/30th second exposures. I gotta get out in the daylight instead of staying up all night long 🙂

I think I've spent $70 TOTAL on this guy. I bought new seals from Jon Goodman, a new merc. battery, a protective filter... I can take the thing apart and clean out the viewfinder, adjust the meter and replace seals. I don't think I've gotten to know ANY camera this well. I'm growing quite fond of it.

Slightly off topic - I have to agree with you about the Canonet case, but at the moment it is the only thing I have to protect mine. Does anyone know of a good, modern alternative. Most small cam cases currently seem to be made for digital p&s, which rarely have much lens protrusion.

Look for a Nikon CF-11 case made for the Nikon EM. It should do a decent job fitting the Canonet QL17 GIII. My CF-17 cases for the Nikon FG come really close, but have the protrusion where the FG grip is. These cases do not suffer from dry-rot as much as the earlier FE/FM cases.

I have a Vitessa T in a Nikkorex case; Canon F1 in a Nikon F case; Canon L1 in a Vivitar SL220 (Cosina ) case.Kodak Retina IIIS in a Nikon CS9 (soft) case; Contax IIIa in a Nikon S2 case... If the case Fits, Wear it!

I have to agree, that is sharp! I just bought a Canonet (CLA'd, super condition) for $70 at a local shop, and have to second (third, fourth.. ?) the notion that these are probably my sharpest images yet. ZING makes a nice black neopreme case that fits the Canonet. You can put it on your belt, use a neck strap or chest harness. 🙂

My Hi-Matic E is sharper wide open than my Canonet 17, but it's probably even up at f4 and beyond. But the Canonet wide open has a very flattering effect on faces that I can't explain, a kind of gentleness that I really like. (When I get my scanner up I promise to post some photos that demonstrate this quality.)

JJ, I love your guitar player pic. Great work. I also like the background, as is. Lends context, for me anyway. Demonstrates well what the Canonet can do, but more important, what you can do with it. Post more!!

As for wishing the Canonet were AE priority, my solution is to meter and then just set the shutter speed consistent with my "target" aperture. Gets me in the ball park most of the time if the light isn't all over the place.
