After seeing the pictures of greyhoundman's pretty zorki 4 with his homemade lenshood, I decided to post some pictures of lenshoods and caps I have made over the last ten years. The lenshood shown on the Leicas, I machined today. I had been watching the price of leica hoods on ebay and decided to make one myself. I could buy another FSU rangerfinder for what the genuine article would cost.

How long may the lens hood be for a 50mm lens? I just made a lenshood for the industar 22 (50mm collapsibl) from two M42 srew mount makro rings. I thighted them with window seals (the lenses outher diameter is some thing like 35 mm, but the rings inner diameter is like 40 or so). May be the M39 screw mount makro rings would fit better, but they wount reach me before fraiday. And the best is, the rings are still usabl, they arent damaged in now way.
but now to the point: the lens hood is now something like 1,5 cm long, is this to long? if I look at 2maneekameras first picture then it isnt, but the diameter of the "leika hood" is bigger then mines (40 mm). I now the best proof are the pictures, but can somebody guess:)

I don't know what camera body you are using. If the back opens or is removable, you can place a piece of ground glass at the film plane and set the shutter to bulb or time and open the shutter. If using the bulb or Z setting, use a cable release to keep the shutter open. focus the image on the ground glass and observe. If you can't see the lens hood or any shadow, the hood is okay. I sometimes use the light seals from old 35mm film cassettes to line the inside part of the lenhood where it contacts the lens. I paint the inside of the hood flat black or if made of black abs I scuff the inside surface to minimize the possibility of reflection.
