Just bought a 5cm1.4, do these flare a lot? Lens is in good condition and no haze. And do they take regular 43mm filters? Anyone tried these for Infrared? Thank you.

This has been discussed a few times at least. You need an older style “E43” filter. Modern filters and hoods have a different thread pitch at the 43mm size, and using one will slowly strip away the old threads on the lens. Even if you may think it fits correctly, you will actually be damaging the lens. The original Leica and Nikon 43mm filters are collectible and expensive. Walz made lots of different hoods and filters in the 50s which are the classic 43mm size, they are more affordable. There is also at least one Chinese manufacturer that has been producing E43 filters these days, I have one and it’s great. Highly recommend this route over buying a normal 43mm modern filter and hood, which again will cause damage to the threads.
I have never had a problem using my modern 43mm filters with any of many Nikkor lenses using 43mm filters and hoods.

I have a an older Nikkor 5cm 1.4. I did not like the way modern filters fit but you can carefully screw on the threads although any binding however subtle, you should stop. You'd probably be more satisfied if a decent chinese E43 is available . but that does not get around the filter issue. I know I went around and around about this a while back I don't remember exactly how I ended up. Not using it much and have too much stuff to look through.

I've got two of these lenses and modern 43mm filters will fit, just not screw in all the way, but they work fine. I've got a lens hood for one of mine, it was made in the 1950's by Walz in Japan, and they're probably pretty hard to come by now. But I use the other one without a hood and have had no issues. If the sun is in the shot, yeah it's gonna flair, but that's more to do with the 70 year old optics than a lens hood.

I just took my Walz Y2 off the Nikkor-Sc 5cm F1.4 and screwed a Tiffen 43mm clear filter, "USA" into it. It screws in easily and in all the way. There are different filter threads on filters, 0.5mm and 0,75mm. Thread Pitch has to be correct.

If I remember, when you go to HOYA online they still make, on order, 43mm filters with the correct pitch. I think that is what I did.
Some Google Searches confirm that other users of the S-Mount and LTM Nikkor-SC 5cm F1.4 found 43mm 0.75mm thread pitch hoods and filters work well.

That’s not the problem, it’s the solution. The vintage Nikkors have the same filter pitch as Leica “E43” or 0.5mm. When you use modern 0.75mm pitched filters you are causing damage to the threads, despite what you might think. I guess if you don’t screw the filter down hard you may not do any damage, but then it can slip off. Anything made by Walz is likely 0.5mm and from the 50s or early 60s. That Tiffen is likely 0.75mm if it’s not ancient looking. I don’t think you should screw then into each other, even if it seems to be working perfectly, you are probably causing some damage to the threads.
I've just screwed Two Tiffen made in the USA filters into the Nikkor 5cm F1.4, S-Mount black version- all the way and they fit fine. Unfortunately, the pitch of the Nikkor is not listed in the books. I have two sets of the Walz filters and also have Nikkor branded filters- all work. The 3.5cm F2.5 has a B&W 43ES on it, safely screws in all the way. According to the B&W guide, this is a 0.75mm pitch. I use them on the 5cm F1.4, 3.5cm F2.5, 3.5cm F1.8, and 13.5cm F3.5.

Maybe Nikon lenses exported to Europe had a different pitch from those sold in Japan, this one came with an S4 bought at a PX in Japan. I traded an N8008 for it 25 years ago , put the filter on. I have a lot of Nikon S-mount lenses. The Millenium Nikkor 50/1.4 that came with my S3-2000 has a B&W UV 43mm filter, also fits the 5cm F1.4. These screw in completely and easily.

No, all of the lenses sold in that time period had the same 43mm 0.5mm pitch. I have no doubt that you think all of these filters fit with no problem. I have also tried a modern B+W filter on these lenses and it does appear to work. But it is not good for the lens' threads to screw on a filter or hood with the wrong pitch. (I suppose if the filter is softer than the lens, you will slowly ruin the filter's threads instead)

My Tokyo 5cm F1.4 in LTM uses the same filter as the Millenium Nikkor, I just checked. My original s-Mount 2.8cm f3.5 3.5cm F1.8, 3.5cm F2.5, and 13.5cm F3.5 all use 43mm and I can screw the B&W 43 into them as easily as the Millenium Nikkor.
So yes- everyone can test and measure for themselves, but I am sticking with my original Walz and new B&W that all interchange readily with each other.

Guess we will have to agree to disagree. My new Chinese E43 filter matches my Walz 43mm 0.5mm filters, and they all mate perfectly with my old lenses like 3.5cm f/1.8 and 13.5cm f/3.5. My modern filters and lenses have a distinctly different thread pitch, and it is obvious to me that they do not slip on correctly.

Ahh well this is a conundrum. I also bought a Voigtlander 25/4 so I thought they could share filters. Well what I will do is buy a couple and measure them. But it seems the Walz are not cheap anymore. I remember buying those a few years ago.

I use a modern Zeiss T-coated 43mm filter on my Nikkor-S 5cm f1.4. It screws on fine; I’m careful not to overtighten it. I have a bunch of generic 43mm screw-on hoods, as well as the original clamp-on hood. I prefer the generic screw-on hood; the clamp-on can get knocked off.
My modern 40.5mm filters thread perfectly into the Collapsible Nikkor 5cm F2 in LTM. These also work on the Sonnar 5cm F1.5 and 5cm F2.

You can use the Hood that comes with the S3-2000 Millenium Nikkor on the 1950s Nikkor-SC 5cm F1.4, and you can use the original hood that was sold with the Nikkor 5cm F1.4 with the Millenium Nikkor. The two are interchangeable.
Can you please tell me the dimensions of these lenshoods for the 50 1,4 🙂

I measured the newer shade- 60mm diameter, 26mm height- measured from where the shade extends from the lens, not counting the inner threads.
The vintage shades have gone way up. The one shown, bought in the original box- at $40, considered it a very good price.
My favorite shades are the original Walz Vented lens hoods. They are getting scarce. I have several in 40mm, 40.5mm, and 46mm. I have a couple sets of the Walz filters for Canon, Sonnar, Nikkor, and even the Summitar. These used to be cheap. I have a couple boxes of filters. I have filters that just will not go into certain lenses, the threads can vary slightly- too thick, too deep, etc. Best advice- if you cannot easily screw the filter or hood into the lens, do not force it. If the threads of the filter or lens are damaged - be careful. If the filter ring is dirty, or the threads of the filter are dirty- clean them before screwing the filter in. I probably have 20 Nikkor lenses that use 43mm filters. I've looked at several today- the B&W 43mm filters fit the oldest 5cm F1.4 that I have (a Tokyo lens) to the Millennium Nikkor.
The B&W 43mm filter screws easily into my Nikkors old and new. It also screws into my LTM Minolta Chiyoko 5cm F2. The Canon 43mm Skylight goes into the new Nikkor and the old Minolta. BUT- the Walz 43mm filters will not screw into the mid-1950s Minolta. Lesson- don't force things.
