Hood For Zeiss 21mm f/4.5 Biogon

Walz & Hoya made vented 40.5mm hoods for the 50/1.5 & 50/2 Sonnars. They're usually marked "For Sonnar" on the outside rim. These are exactly the same design as the 39mm hoods they made for the 50/2 Summicron (marked "For Summicron") & 50/1.4 Nikkor-S (marked, you guessed it, "For Nikkor f/1.4").

I don't believe they ever made hoods for the wide angle Zeiss lenses.

I'm afraid I don't know of any official Walz histories. I'm just relating what I know about all the hoods & filters I've seen & bought on eBay! 😛

I went with the americaneagle_camera hood. BTW, would you know what lens cap would work with that hood?

I wonder if Walz ever made a hood for the Zeiss? I like the Walz hood I have for the 5cm. And there seem to be many others out there.

Well, the american_eagle hood arrived over the weekend and it's different than the heavystar one. It looks like it's made for the 21! One thing though. Doesn't thread the lens as easily as the other hood. Thread pitch looks similar to the other, but is a bit tight mounting. F2, do you notice this as well? ( after mounting it again, it seems to mount easier--hmmm... ). Now, since the hood is mounted I'd like to leave it there. Do you know the filter size of the outer ring of the hood so I could maybe find a cap for it?

Here is an example photo taken with an old 21mm f4.5 Biogon with a Heavy star 40.5mm Vented wide angle hood. Notice the corners?

I'm not sure if it's the same one. I don't have the lens anymore. Someone PM'd me back then about a Schneider Kreuznach lens cap from B&H Photo. It worked perfectly, but I can't remember the filter size.

You have the 50's version of the 21 Biogon? I really liked it and didn't have a problem with the aperture ring. Wish I still had it. Another lens to buy again someday.

I have never seen a Zeiss made hood for the original 21f4.5 Biogon. The aperture ring is too close to the front to use a "regular" kind of hood. I have used a filter ring (without the filter) as a vestigal hood (more for protection as the front element is right out there!).
I think the trick would be to to "stack" some filter rings and check at which point they start to show up in the image area.
The old Biogon 21 is surprisingly flare resistant as it is - but it is a good idea to protect that front.

I mostly want a hood to keep my fingers out of my shots. Since you can't easily use the focus wheel on the Zeiss external mount lenses I keep getting my fingers in the shot from the very small, forward mounted focus ring.

I use my 21mm Biogon a lot... it is my most used lens, really. But I have never felt the need for a hood. Go figure.
