Hood hunting - 2 lenses Leitz, 1 not

I am posting this here because two thirds of it belongs in this forum. I need hoods for a Summitar, a Summaron 35/3.5 and a Steinheil 85/2.8. Since the entire Summaron rotates when focussing, the hood for it must be round. For the Summitar, given the fact that it is so prone to flare, I'd like a large rectangular hood in place of the round one I already have. The SOOPD which Leitz made for it can be found here and there, but I cannot afford one. I have not yet seen the Steinheil, which is on its way to India from California via Ontario, but for it I would prefer a rectangular hood to a round one: assuming the lens does not rotate. I understand that the rectangular hood made for the Industar 61 L/D can be used on a Summitar, but I have not been able to locate one for sale. I used the correct Leitz hood with the Summaron I had until three years ago, but they too are now far beyond my budget. In general, I prefer clamp-on hoods to screw-in ones; and the Summitar's peculiar thread pretty much rules out the second type anyway. Will someone please tell me where I should hunt? My friend Google, ordinarily most helpful in matters including the photographic, has let me down this time.

Hello Paysam,

Sorry to hear you are having lens-hood problems. The barn-door (SOOFM, I think) lenshoods fo the Summitar are fairly readily available on ebay - I know this because one arrived for me the day before yesterday. It cost 10.70 GBP, which I though eminently reasonable given the beautiful engineering. I've heard other people talk about using an adaptor to make standard filters/hoods fit the Summitar, but haven't investigated this route.

Thanks, Sean (can't manage the accented "a"). The hood for the Summitar is the SOOPD. I just checked on eBay and found three: Buy It Now prices (US$) 50, 85 and 98; bids -, 40 and 78. The SOOFM is for the Summicron, though it appears that some versions will also go with the Summitar; or else the advertisers are mistaken or misleading. Perhaps you'll check your hood to see if its markings include "Summitar". The hood for the Summar was the SOOMP, if I remember, similar to the SOOPD but a little smaller all around and thus less effective. I don't know the exchange rate, but it appears that you got an excellent deal. There were three kinds of SOOPD: one with a clamp, which would fit any Summitar; one for the Summitars with a V-groove; and one for those with a flat groove.

You might consider a round metal "tele" hood for the Steinheil. Not sure of the filter diameter on that lens, but if you know it, there are ebay sellers of new metal hoods, as well as B&H which has almost any hood you could want. Have fun with the new lens.

There's one exactly like mine on the uk ebay right now (I have no connection with the seller). Mine fits both the Summitar and the rigid Summicron; it has two little springloaded clamps which grip the lens barrel. Try www.ebay.co.uk and search for Summitar.

Pbjbike, I take it that by "tele" you mean one which is longer than those made for normal or, heaven help us, wide angle lenses. Round will be the only option if the entire lens rotates, as does the Summaron and as a Komura 135 I had did. I haven't yet seen the lens. When I get it, less than a week from now and probably soaked in maple syrup, I shall know the filter size: but then I prefer clamp-on hoods. I'm looking forward to seeing what the lens can do, thanks. It ought to be slightly softer than my much loved but sometimes too sharp Canon FD 100.

Sean (Alt-Ctl-a no work, nor Alt plus numeric key-pad), I've found that some hoods -- or one particular hood -- can be used both with the Summitar and with the Summicron. I suspect, though, that the sprung clamps do not fit around the barrel but into a groove around the barrel. I am far from certain of this, and you have the thing in front of you. Very well, I accept that you have no connection with the eBay seller. Now tell me, please, how you are related to the late, dreaded Colonel Sebastian Moran who gave one S. Holmes of Baker Street such a difficult time.
