I just received an order from Heavystar that included a 72mm standard hood. It was bought to probably use with the 50/0.95. As you all know, the original hood is short and EXPENSIVE. This one looks like it will be a fine alternative. It's a screw-in, so it has less chance of getting lost than the clamp-on Canon types. It's probably a bit deeper (I don't have the "correct" hood to measure depth.. anyone help??), but that shouldn't effect anything. I'll test it shortly and make sure there is no vignetting.
Also bought a 40.5 for the Contax 50/1.5. It also looks very nice. These are well made, super light, and priced right. I'll join the group that is happy with the vendor. As usual, no connection, except as satisfied customer.
Also asked if he had any 40mm hoods for the Canon's, but no answer. I included it as a message with payment, so he might not have even read it. Anyone know if he carries such an animal? If not, it seems like a good thing to manufacture. There are certainly a lot of us using the several lenses that take the standard 40mm hoods. Maybe he'll take the hint....

not sure where but i remember reading that he he was asked about 40mm hoods and replied that that he does not make them.
it would be nice as his prices are very nice.

but don't forget the other new 40mm hoods that be bought at camerquest. they are great, nice sized hoods and it is so nice to just order one and not to have to hunt ebay for one.

sorry

sorry

Sorry, guys, I forgot to mention that he is an eBay vendor. Sorry to read that he doesn't have 40mm hoods. I know about the others available, but the price has put me off. I have several lenses, and would prefer 2-3 hoods around. That can get expensive.... Right now I'm trying to recover from Xmas, Tamarkin's last auction, a nice Contax and a Rollie 2.8F 120/220 with working meter that I found last weekend, in Canada, no less... Wowsaaa, am I broke (a retorical (sp?) question)??

A couple of quick shots of the hoods mounted. The one on the 0.95 looks to be deeper than the original, which is almost a joke as a hood. It doesn't intrude that much more, but I use a seperate VF most of the time, anyway. Nice stuff...

Held the original canon hood before, it's about half in lenght compare to harry's.

I am getting a 2 peice hood made, 118mm (from 72mm) x 35 mm, something like the T.A (of Rapidwinder) Nikon 50mm f/1.1 hood.

Will post some pcitures when it is ready.

Cheers

Interesting news... Please keep us informed on the progress, and look forward to the pics. Only problem might be cost, since it will be a "custom", and can't be a volume item.

I planned on getting some results of a trial shoot, to check on possible vignetting with the hood I'm using. Plans changed with a foot of snow falling here.... Still plan of doing something soon. Winter in New England makes planning difficult. Today is a wash, with family activities (Bruin's game) and linking up with others. Soon, I hope.

Harry:

I am looking forward to it too, will post some pics once it is ready.

If the hood is any good, and if there are enough people interested (five?), I can get a small batch made. The construction is simple, but the materials have to be order since they are beyond the usual size the machinest uses.

The problem is, it machining are done by hand, instead of CNC, no T.A. quality for now... Rough estimate, 80 USD (!?) plus shipping?

If I do this regularly, I will get ban.. :D :D :D

Cheers

Harry, good luck with the hood.

LOL, I guess we need to worry about extra vignetting ...
