being a former slr user, i was always used to a flash atop my camera. recently got hold of a canon 7, and while i thought the lack of a hotshoe won't be an issue, i'm slowly realizing that it can become one, especially when i want to attach a lens that's wide than 35mm (for the finder, eyeing the 15mm cv) or using a flash. thought of buying a bracket to solve the flash problem, but doesn't solve the viewfinder issue.

has anyone done anything about this?

After the camera was released, Canon realized that they had goofed by not puting a show on top of the camera. Their response was a shoe attachment that mounted around the flash sync, IIRC. Unfortunately, this accessory is really rare, and I am not aware of any aftermarket makes. I can't even find a pic on the web of the proper Canon 7 accessory shoe.

A little more info in the following RFF link

I used to have a couple of flash brackets. They folded up when not in use and attached to the bottom of the camera using the tripod socket.

I had a cleasrout a while ago and I am not sure if I still have them. I will try and have a look tomorrow and if they are still around, you are welcome to one.

If you are not going to use a selenium meter then you can just attach a shoe on top of the camera using a glue. Frankly speaking the meter is not of a great use at Canon 7

Sadly, the Canon "Accessory Coupler" for the Canon 7 costs almost as much as the price difference between a Canon 7 and 7s. As a plus, the Canon 7s comes with a reasonably useful CdS meter.

If you want to DIY, several of the flashguns have the correct mating bayonet connector. They're not worth much.
