anyway, what does one call someone who can't see things from the bigots point of view?
MC JC86
Negative Nancy.
I'd like to see more emotional reactions to the art and craft we love, and fewer to hairsplitting differences in technology.
That's one of the few things I've ever seen on here that probably has no valid counter-argument.
Let's remember though, it is a forum named after a specific type of equipment, with sub forums to even more specifics types. Still though, a great idea.

i'm in basic agreement that we could do without trolling of any nature.
this entire digital vs film thing is SO VERY TIRED...at this point i could give a crap anymore!
i don't care who won, just leave me be to live in my ignorance if that is what you believe and stop preaching that your side is best.

You've never been on certain photo.net forums or the Leica owners forums I take it?
In comparison, RFF is almost Victorian in the genteel behavior of it's membership. In comparison.
+1 - Nice folks here.

I feel, you are addressing me personally, among others, since I posted http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=102821. For me, a practical comparison of X100 and Hexar AF is very relevant, looking at portability, shooting speed and desired output only. And I have been on the X100 waiting list but decided to withdraw, because the Hexar gives me more shallow DOF, grain that I like, and better dynamic range. The "enthusiasm" for the X100, all based on camera looks, not on results that it produces, didn't exactly convince me to get one either.
Film vs. digital for me personally is not over. And I value people's opinions on the subject, it all depends how they are being expressed.
Roland.

It seems as though, in the wake of any digicam announcement that people get excited about (e.g, X100), there is always a sharp increase in the number of people who feel it necessary to say that they don't need the fancy new whatever because their Barnack or what have you is still working great, etc. etc.
May I suggest that this is pretty much straight-up trolling? The excellence of your film camera is not relevant in a discussion of new digital photography products. I say this as someone who loves vintage and analog tech, and shot and developed film for many years. Comments like these are the equivalent of dropping by a sports forum to announce that sports is stupid and that people should read books instead. Your love of film is not relevant. It is a legitimate thing to feel, and worth talking about when the topic is, in fact, film photography, but in the context I'm describing it is the equivalent of holding up a big sign that says I AM DEEPLY INSECURE AND FEEL THREATENED BY THINGS I DON'T UNDERSTAND. It makes you look like a jerk, and makes other people feel beleaguered and exasperated.
Let us add to this the fact that the film vs. digital debate is over. People don't actually debate it anymore. Digital won, and film now occupies a small, devoted, and one hopes semi-permanent, niche among photographers. Arguing how great it is compared to digital now feels akin to rehashing the 2004 Bush-Kerry debates. It gives other people an instant headache, and is entirely beside the point.
Film lovers, talk about the stuff all you want. I agree, it is awesome. But stop going out of your way to douse other people's enthusiasm. You are not better than they are. Your aesthetic sensibilities are not superior. You are not necessarily better photographers, or more refined in your personal tastes.
Thank you.

No, I hadn't read that, and wasn't referring to you at all. Your post seems to me just to be celebrating the Hexar, and contains no trolling whatsoever. It is completely reasonable, and exactly the kind of gear-related post I like reading here.

If a thread originates from an honest desire to share information concerning digital cameras, stating the superiority of film cameras is trolling.
If the thread about digital cameras includes comparison to film cameras then an answer from that corner is to be expected and justified.

We even have a Film vs Digital sub forum for this enlightened type of talk.

Really though, yes, it doesn't matter, one way or the other, what you do doesn't effect what I do and that goes for everyone and everyone else. No need to act like it does.

Compared to so many other places, the tone here is almost relentlessly nice. I've always thought that was because so many here have the good sense not to give too much notice to the occasional drive by shooter, random bomb thrower, or troll.
There are a great many passionate people here. Who would have it otherwise? If the price is to tolerate, without comment, the occasional out of place or over-zealous opinion, that doesn't seem to me to be too high.
Besides, everyone knows digital is crap.

haempe, I don't know what you mean. I wasn't aiming this at you--I don't think I've even ever seen a post of yours before.
For what it's worth, the original post was inspired by a comment of Bill58's in the NEX forum, which I've been browsing because I've been thinking about getting a NEX-5. But I'm not angry at him or anyone else. I am just trying to encourage more productive forms of disagreement.

Disagree completely. The board is here to express opinion, some of which is gear talk. Most of it is. If someone disagrees with your POV, it isn't trolling.

I am not arguing that it is.

Might I also suggest a moratorium on the ridiculous, over-the-top ninny-ism surrounding the X-100?
Blather for the sake of blather is one thing, but I'm almost expecting to see threads like "The X-100 cured my cancer!" or "Will the X-100 bring about Middle East peace?"
C'mon people...get a grip.

Somebody here yesterday did say something to the effect that it would "forever change photography". Isn't that close enough?
Full disclosure though, if I had the extra $1200 and had already bought a better scanner, and rebuilt my Leica M outfit, I'd probably want one to replace my LX-3 (no comparison, I know).

I agree with everything said in the original post. It's also really annoying to read (in an otherwise interesting or informative thread) that people are sick of the topic. I don't really get why they would open a thread with a title like "x100 information" and then post "I'm really sick of hearing about this camera". It's self explanatory that if you aren't interested, don't look in the thread.
In pretty much every single x100 thread, or even some of the m4/3 and nex threads you have people arguing that their film camera is better or smarter - a lot of them un-prompted. It would be like the equivalent of me going into a leica M thread and stating that the leica M is stupid because its so expensive and in some ways I prefer the OM system which is 1/15th the price, so why would anyone buy an M? If I did that again and again in every new leica M thread the leica M owners would kick me in the teeth!
