What do you think of Leica Camera advertising? ( for all Leica cameras)
This question covers all current ads, PR, and promotions, in ALL media forms.

What ad campaigns / strategies are working well?

What ad campaigns / strategies are NOT working well?

What new ideas would be more effective -- ie produce more sales? -- keep in mind Leica's limited resources.

How about some advertising? Other than some high end magazines, I have yet to see ANY advertising.

Advertising? What advertising? Leica does advertising?

Seriously, I think CV does a better job than Leica - and I don't see too many CV ads to begin with.

My advice would be to hire an American Marketing Firm (I am originally from Germany and have worked with both German and US MArketing firms and there simply is no comparison). Leica need to be told what it takes to get the word out - all their advertisement has been word to mouth - which works really well if you want to be a specialty vendor (which they certainly are), but if they want to play with the bigger boys, then they will have to take off their gloves.

This is just for the M family of products, I am ignoring all of the other lines and going to focus on the M.

Stop spending money on print add, it costs too much. Most everyone over 30 years old, who might buy a Leica, knows about Leica and so there is little reason to spend money there. Professional photographers, well-healed amateurs know what’s up.

The Leica newsletter I get from email has under whelmed me.

The class on the M8 should be free to owners and $250 for potential buyers. Give away a free IR filter coupon for everyone who attends.

Keep up with photo shows, you need hands on time the professionals and this is one way to get it. Leica days at dealers should be costing you next to nothing, keep them up too.

You had a fun screen saver for the Leica M, make a new one that covers the LTM cameras through the M8. Make it for Mac and Windows. It’s cute, it’s fun and it costs almost nothing to do. If you want to make it really cool, make it so people can add their own Leica pictures into it between cameras. Now that would grab some attention.

With a two pronged approach, I would focus on one market, the new photographers. Those in school for photography, be it photojournalism, artistic, what ever.

The first approach is to leverage the old Leica School of Photography. Make a web-based course that covers all of the topics in this great program. It is 30 years old, so it needs some updating for new technologies (metering in the M, AE, yes you must include the R system in it). You might want to develop sections on other families of Leica photo products, but focus on the M and the R first. Make it web technology based so it can run from your site, be downloaded completely to a server in a school or burned to a CD (perhaps DVD) of a user for free. Do not focus on selling your products. Focus on how to use your products better and how to use other people products better. Make better photographers and tell them why Leica is better while you do it.

The next prong is on contests. Run regional contest for college juniors and seniors (4 in the US) and give away a MP or M7 and two lenses (any 2 ‘Crons or Elmars they want). Engrave the contest, date and their signature on the top. You have to build the next generation of photographers’ loyalty and desire. This would be a great way. Use some of the Photographers who use Leica cameras a judges, get their names in the spotlight and you have a triple win (students, Leica and the judges).

While I would love to say fund a contest here (RFF), I’m not sure of the value to Leica. We are the converted, they need to find people to convert.

What advertising? I can't remember seeing any Leica advertising in quite some time. And surely not about the M8.

First, Leica should produce a limited edition "Sultan of Dubai" model with dinosaur skin and gold trim (the innards could be any recent M body). Then advertise it in World Oil magazine. Bound to attract hordes of wealthy Arabs.

I am thinking something a little simpler.

They first have to have a product or product line that will have broad appeal. Their current products match their current advertising budget, high end niche stuff. Their customer base is a small lot of nuts like us who need no advertising to reach, and who largely can't or won't purchase a new camera from them anyway. Broaden the product line, and then advertise to the masses. Otherwise save the money, it will pay the court cost when they close.

Follow Apple and set up Leica Centers in major world cities. 100% Leica products shop and gallery with well-trained staff and good stocks.

Make all cameras a la carte with a seriously fast production time. The cameras are assembled from components so let's have next day delivery.

And keep sending out the odd brochure to people like us who like to read them and show to friends.

Oh, just the filing of the bankruptcy papers. That is a court cost.

I feel grumpy this morning so that may sound harsh, but if they don't find a way to sell a whole lot of stuff really fast they are in trouble. And unless they have or can get the capital to invest in a "relevant" product that will appeal to anyone other than us it may be too late.

How about fixing all the problems w/ the M8......and an "8 1/2" (lite) camera that more people can afford?

I have never ever seen a leica ad except for shops that sell leica stuff. I think thats the place to start, start advertising in high key places....time magazine, the new yorker, china photography magazine, etc....

Leica has an advertizing budget?

I would hazzard a guess that Leica should use advertizing to reach out and grab people. Show the world that useing a Leica camera is easy. Oh hell I don't really know. I guess Leica needs to just start getting younger people to use their equipment, of course it would have to be significantly lower in cost too. I few different Smaller digital P&S cameras that could be sold at, K-mart, Wal-Mart, Meijer, what have you.

If leica could really become a player in the P&S digital market, I guess money would start flowing in. Advertize it in a way that young people will see it. Make it cheap enough to be in the same quality area as the Canon P&S digitals.

Just a thought.

The slick brochures/catalogues sell me. I’ve been carrying around “Leica M System” for a few weeks now. I open it and drool over an M8 . . . or an M7 . . . or an MP . . . . or an à la carte. Looking at that brochure will lead to a purchase . . . one of these days.
