How careful are we in our postings?

I'm getting the feeling that "it's only the internet, stupid" is the popular answer. ;)

I don't know what you mean. "There's a sucker born every minute." (Attributed to P.T. Barnum, but actually uttered by a large piece of stone quarried in Fort Dodge, Iowa... ok, maybe it was said ABOUT Barnum by the owner of the large piece of stone... let me check the Internet... )

On edit... photography is a narrow enough field that, fortunately, when someone says something outrageous and forwards it as "fact" or "truth" there are a number of folks standing on the sidelines ready to call them on it... it's our own form of peer review. Now, when it comes to opinion on the validity of anyone else's opinion, RFF members certainly shine at thoroughly vetting thought. It IS one of the most interesting corners of the Internet in my humble opinion.

There are a lot of facts, some may have been proven scientifically, some may be born out of a religious belief or experience, and some may just be repeated enough in mass media, robocalls, people holding up signs, knocking on your door, or gathering in large numbers and yelling at the top of their lungs.

Everyone probably has a fact they believe in or had believed in until they saw that they were wrong.

Hell, just look at Climate Change, work of God, Man, or Nature? Influence surrounding the facts, include Corporations, Political Parties, Religious organizations, Universities, PACS, Non-Profit organizations, For-Profit organizations, regions of the world, developing nations, developed nations, NIMBY, as soon as we get this ______ fixed we will look at it.

Then there are just con men and people who love jerking you around and see how many people will jump.

Have you 'Liked' someone or something today? Someone's career or business may depend on it.

I know which facts I believe in and take time to write to those in government to provide my experience if not just feelings regarding an issue. Then there is just find time to volunteer to make a difference at the local level.

..... think global, act locally.

Not to sure how careful I was in this posting.

Unless you're reading the sea stories on this thread, in which case, all bets are off regarding truth. We "float tested it." :D

So, my question is: when we post here about photography, techniques, personalities and so on, how careful are we to check our facts? Where do we check them?

I don't know about anyone else, but whenever I post something that isn't my opinion or conjecture, I either know it cold and can cite a reference if need be or have looked it up just before posting. I write technical documentation for my living so the habit is ingrained ...
