How cold can R-D1 stand ?

I am planning to visit China next week, the places I visit will be around -5 to -10 degree Celcius, can R-D1 stand that cold ?

The manual says,

Operating
5 to 35 Celcius

Storage
-20 to 60 Celcius

But I am sure others have reported using it at much colder temps then that.

You'll find that the batteries go flat very quickly. They can be slightly restored by keeping a spare in your pocket and swapping over when they flag. I've found that a Canon Eos 10D suffers badly - the metering goes, the LCD packs up, and the shutter no longer works. And that's in temperatures above freezing point.

In a thread re: M8 low temperature, I regularly use the M8 at -20C but failed at -28C. Carlos (etrigan63) said it may be the SD card.

I agree with him because it stopped and "hung" while writing to the SD card.

The R-D1 can be used in "arctic" temperatures. I've used mine in temps under -20 degrees C (down to -35 degrees C at times) in winter in Mongolia.

Everybody says to keep a spare battery in your pocket. My advice would be to keep several of them as close to your body as possible, deep under your clothes. My experience is that while my coat/ trousers pockets aren't as cold as the outside temp, it's still cold enough for those batteries to give the ghost early. Keep them really warm. The only way would be to keep them close to your body.

Used it at -10° and had no problems. Operation of the focus rings and the shutter charge lever were a little stiffer, but that was all I noticed. But be prepared to keep several batteries very close to your body. Especially the cheap ones from the bay required warm ups very often.

i have taken mine down to -20 or so, no problem..-10 is no issue excpet for faster battery wear.

I was going to try it out today since Toronto is at about -26 where I work right now -but I think I stop functioning at this temp...hehe

I've used mine in wisconsin in march, no problems. temps from -2 all the way up to 23 (fahrenheit)
