How did I end up here - Nikon N80

Regarding stickiness, it is not only Nikon models suffering, my canon EOS5 and my Minolta 700si suffer from it too but to a less degree. I bought pre-injection swabs (100 for £2) and clean it so nicely (you only need 2-3) swabs to clean it.

Edit: with regards to the second part of your post (selling the F2) I would say keep it. Photographing in difficult weather (I.e. snow and you wearing thick gloves) will be a challenge with the F80. The F2 is in a different league as a camera.

I found my F80 at an op shop about 10yrs ago, I think I paid AUD$10-$15. I like it a lot, very quiet well damped shutter and good handling, but a noisy and slightly slow AF.

Am I remembering correctly that it does not meter with manual lenses? I think that is why I favored other Nikons, even the weird N70.

What could be a long story made really really short.

Somehow I now own a Nikon N80.

Think it started with a cheap 28/2.8D.

I have this weird thought of getting another with a 50/1.4D.


Two bodies (together weighing just a smidge more than a single F100)

Two lenses (28 is my everyday do it all wide - and well.. fast 50!)

I’ve crunched the weights (weight is really my main point here) against the features and lack there of.

I could sell my F2 and it’s AIS (28/2.0 + 50/1.8) lens kit to buy the next n80.


Walk away with cash even (there’s more to the F2 kit). Is it crazy that I can see myself being happy with plastic? Maybe knowing I can afford to replace it all helps.

I was pretty sure it would meter stopped down with the DOF button, but Mr. Rockwell says "NO." It's the N90 that can meter with manual lenses.

That sounds right. I know the N90 and N70 work well with manual lenses.

Wouldn't want to try to focus manual lenses on the N80 anyway; it's got an AF focusing screen.

It does have the usual Nikon green focus dot, but that is not known for being all that accurate and requires moving the eyeball away from framing.

However, that said, it's easy and pretty cheap to add a dandelion chip to MF lenses if you REALLY want to meter with them on the N80. 🙂

I paid $60ish for a perfect, non-sticky body and a 28-70 which is a really nice little lens.

Agree, no need to sell an F2 kit. 🙂

I've never even touched an N80 but the 28/2.8D and 50/1.4D are two lenses I love. In fact, any of the AF and AF-D primes are sweet. I love putting one on the camera and listening to it go "thunk...whirr" as it seats and focuses.

By all means, sell your F2 kit to fund another half-dozen sticky, plastic AF bodies. Why not?
