How did you get out of Leica?

I've never parted with Leica since I knew it in 2009;
I wish that I never have to do that, and I don't think that I would do that anytime soon.

Never got out .
Can`t see the point .
They aren`t the answer to every photo circumstance so in that case I just use something else (Canon 5D3 ).

Selling stuff just means losing money especially if later you want to buy it back.
I found out the hard way .... it`s a good way to burn through money .

Obviously not so much if you never change your mind .

Never got in.

I am pretty sure they are excellent cameras but from my point of view they always seemed to be the showoff or statement playtoys marketed and aimed only for the very privileged, rich or famous upper class.

YMMV and IMHO applies.

Good to hear from you. I like your photos, they are rangefinder style even without Leica.

Totally agree with this. Never seen the point of being member of the club.

People can spend far more on mid-range digitals than they do on film Leicas, so I don't see the upper class/privileged connection.

Well, go buy the latest M10 and 50mm 1.4... that’s not midrange material. Also, buy an M6 with the latest 35mm... no again. Leica is many things but generally it isn’t mid range digital priced. Historically, Leica has been priced high. It’s only getting worse now.

LTM Leica and couple of FSU RF lenses are still possible well well under 500 USD. But if it has to be Leitz lens or even newer Viogtlander...

I was thinking the same until I got Nikon F2. To me all-mechanical quality is equal to durability. Here is no film M build like F2. Ms are Porsche like. Nice to drive on sunny day and on the dry road. Nice to show up with. Nice to have.
F2 is Komatsu. Not sexy and heavy. It is made to be driven through the dirt and still works while and after it. Perfection to last.

F2's are great, except for noise and shutter vibration. But that applies to most mechanical SLR's. I'm not sure there is a "perfect" system out there.

Thank goodness for the Cosina made Voigtlander lenses!!! Ha, ha, I wouldn't want people thinking I'm privileged, rich or famous.

I'm not finding mirror to be problematic, but to be honest I'm not as confident with SLR focusing as with RF. With F2 I'm using 19,20 and 28mm lenses and mis-focus is less problematic. At this moment I could only focus well f1.4, f1.5 lenses with RF.

I never did "get it" with the Leica thing. Practically any SLR is a better picture-taker; the noise and mirror bounce is a complete non-issue to me. And the lenses? Olympus OM, Takumar screw mount, Canon FD, Nikkor, etc... Not too many dogs on that list.

And if we're speaking of appearances, I think the M is only beautiful to those folks who think 1970s Brutalist architecture is beautiful (google it if you have to). In other words, not me.

Yes, that's true... but they are not exactly for everyone. They have their idiosyncratic faults that you have to overcome to enjoy using them. The Leica M3 is just as modern as an M10 in many ways.

Using a Leica, I don’t feel a member of a club, any more than when I used Nikons, Pentaxes, Hassleblads, Yashicas, Rolleis or, come to it, my Zorki 4. It’s my hobby, I save and just use gear that suits my pocket and needs.

As for cost and elitism, well yes, I have had this levelled at me, and remember clearly the time years ago when a fellow non-photographer work colleague asked me how much my M4-P and Summicron cost, so I told him.

Incredulity followed together with his opinion that I was a spendthrift idiot, until I asked him many fishing reels and rods he had bought in the last year and what they cost: things suddenly went quiet.

I had to get out of Leica when I needed to raise every penny I could for the deposit on my first property, and I sold my M4-P for £250 more than I paid for it.

Well, of course an M10 isn't mid range. LOL

A mid-range Canon or Nikon body can be far more expensive than an M6, but only one of those will be worth half in short order...

Yet people don't bat an eye at the price of the Canon, and are astonished at the price of an M6, thinking it somehow elite...

It's rather silly, as one can put money into a film Leica and easily get it all back, and sometimes more, if one buys right; that'll never happen with the Canikon.

I’m new to Leica. I’ve had an M4 for a few months and I can really appreciate it as a fine, built-to-last picture taking machine. I prefer medium format to 35mm, and continue to shoot Hasselblad and Bronica 645, but being able to grab a compact, portable camera is a nice thing. Classic film Leicas are not inexpensive, but because they are durable and repairable - and a pleasure to use - I think they are a good value. Digital is another matter.

I used to shoot weddings with a pair of m6 bodies and a three lens set, and an xpan as well. Quit doing that and sold it all fifteen years ago. Bought a nice m3/collapsible combo two months ago, and 200 rolls of hp5 and a plustek scanner. I like the m3 better...
