How do I use this shutter release thing?

I can't figure out the shutter release cable. In fact, I suspect mine might be broken because I think I've tried everything.

Step 1 - Screw into shutter button

Step 2 - ???

then wind the shutter, press the release like a syringe

make sure you unscrew/loosen/screw in the retaining collar on the remote if such is present

Thanks! My camera gets back tomorrow (I dropped it on day 2 and messed up the rangefinder), so I'll try it then.
