I usually end up with one of the little buggers licking the front element.
I photograph like any other day... whatever I think will make a good photo. I'm not into religion.

There's no specific subject I photograph with new lenses (or new cameras) but the first film is always b&w that I develop and scan the same day - can't wait to see the results if I got something new.

It was spring the last time I christened a lens, so I did it by photographing red and white tulips.

I don't accumulate enough lenses to know exactly the first shots I've taken with them. But I don't have cats, so outside of that I would say my subject is a person on the NYC subway as I love shooting in it.

I'm Jewish so I usually take a snip off the tip of each new lens.

This undoubtedly deserves a +1.

I take each new lens for a walk through the City, to places I've shot regularly over the last ten years or so. Come to think of it, I do the same with every new camera as well. Shooting the same subjects gives me a sense of how each camera represents them, and which camera is best suited to each subject.

My feet up on the sofa shot. I use it to see how sharp my lens is! Oh, a holey sock!

Me, too! Please get new socks!
Alternately, I travel to the waters of Lake Minnetonka.

what?
Make pictures of my porch. The light is always perfect there. Just the furniture and the cat if she's there. Then I study the "look" on my computer; then I pixel peep at which point I know I've gone too far with the "lab testing". Go out and shoot for a week and re-asses.

I am sort of thinking about a Nokton 50/1.1 as my next lens. Now that would require some real snipping. This undoubtedly deserves a +1.
Please invite me to your next lens bris.

Haha, I love the answers given here. I must admit I think whenever I have a new camera or lens to play with, one of the cats (or both) usually ends up on the film (or pixels). I've almost given up on taking pictures of my husband but I suspect he's on most 'first pictures' as well. I have never photographed anyone who was so consistent in closing his eyes every time I click the shutter. It's utterly bizarre- as if I am going to shoot him with something else than a camera :O
Maybe he's become allergic.
Apart from that I don't have a real 'ritual'. Mostly I just go out and shoot, location depends on my mood and equipment.
