How do you carry your camera to work?

Hey guys,

I carry a big messenger bag, which holds my laptop and books, to school. Of late i've been wanting to bring my camera along with me to school. i have a domke f5xb now, and i've been stuffing my domke into my messenger bag to provide some form of protection for my camera.

As a result, its really really tight in my messenger bag, and its almost impossible to get my camera out without first setting down my bag, opening it up, and then carefully removing it with utmost precision due to the sheer clutter in my messenger bag.

I was wondering if you guys have any solutions to this, any cases or bags that would provide adequate protection for my m6 allowing me to just toss it into my bag, and yet allow me to get it out easily and conveniently from my messenger bag when i want to.

It would be nice if it was cheap too 🙂 thanks for the advice in advance!

I'm having the same dilemma myself, I was thinking some sort of camera wrap for my m3

I ride my bicycle to work, so I also use a messenger bag. A Bailey Works Super Pro. I put some padding from an old camera bag inside one of the outer pockets, attached with velcro. The shape of the padding folds around so it's padded all around, so I stuff my M6 in there. It fits fine. If I bring my other lens, I just stick it in another pocket. Because it's one of the outer pockets, the contents of the main section of the bag (change of clothes, books, beer, etc.) don't get in the way of me getting it out quickly if I feel the need. I haven't run into any problems so far, although, I suppose it's possible it could get damaged if I were hit by a car or something, but then if that happened, my camera would probably be the least of my worries.

If I'm riding bicycle or motorcycle, my MP + Summicron 35/2 or Elmar 50/2.8 combo is resting in a Domke insert (just large enough for this combo) in the front compartment of the bag.

If I'm taking bus, the camera is either in the side mesh pocket or in my hand.

I think using some Domke (or other) insert will give some extra protection to your M6.

I have a backpack with two waterbottle carriers on each side. One holds my water bottle, one holds my M. The M is fastened to my backpack via a carabiner. Which doesn't allow the camera to hit the ground in the event of a drop.

What cases, bags ?
I have one of my Ms with me all the time, be it work, strolling around or whatever. No bags, no cases. The camera is hanging off my shoulder (or across my chest) - always ready for the action (even though I'm not always ready myself...🙂 )
While driving to work, it sits just near me on the passenger place..

Everything I need for work most days fits in my domke 803, (and on some days I can go light and bring the f5xb instead), and I still have room for my M and a lens or too. Or some other camera combination.

If I'm bringing the Speed Graphic? (and oh yes, sometimes I do... 🙂)
Then I bring a backpack.

I can't say enough good things about them..checked out the shop where they are manufactured in Seattle. Tom himself was working that day, gave us a tour of the shop, ordered a bag on the spot! Picked out all the colors and materials there. Last I checked tom was working on a camera insert for his bags as well (his brother a professional photographer) was testing it out.

Most often I carry my camera by itself off my shoulder - the one camera, one lens routine. If I have more things to carry Ill place the camera in my black-on-black Billingham (formerly DOMKE 803) along with the other stuff. The Billingham has a very fast opening system where I can access my camera rapidly.

I use a large lens/utility bag, nylon type w divider from Think Tank as an extra pocket inside the Messenger bag. Holds the R-D1 w lens and an extra lens, extra batteries and SD cards. Works ok, but am looking for better solution.

On a shoulder strap. If the weather's bad then I limit myself to a camera that fits inside my raincoat.

If you do want to keep your camera in a bag then may I suggest one of the Crumpler bags (or similar) with separate dedicated camera compartment?

In my soft briefcase. I have a poncy little black bag in there called a Rina that the camera sits in. Very quick access if I need it.

I recently got a messenger bag from Freitag <http://www.freitag.ch> (the Dexter). It's unpadded so I folded a padded a4 envelope in 3rds and taped it, put it in the bottom of the bag. I can fit a large hardcover book, my Nikon D200+lens, and a lunchbox in there w/o any problems.

Earlier I used a small padded shoulderbag that used to hold a Sony projector. Very minimal padding, but just a bit on the small side.

I don't bike but I ride public transport everywhere.

Leica has a dedicated neoprene case/wrap thing, that I use to cover my M6 when I throw it in my rucksack.
