That first one is right on the mark. Maybe a little more exposure in camera with the other two?

I love the three shots above, but thinking of what Bob says - would it look that much different in Tri-X?
I think I have been experimenting too much. I bought a sh-tload of Arista (Tri-X) and will stick with that for a while for B&W. I am more worried about my agitation, which I CAN see the effects of.

These are all over the map, I usually treat it the same as tri-x or whatever, develop it in either d76, xtol, acufine, or rodinal/whatever I can get my hands on. I shoot it from EI 200-3200.
With D76 1:1 I do 10.5 minutes at 70 degrees for EI400, seems to work pretty well.
I have no idea which combinations these are, but they are all scans from fb prints made with hp5+ negs in 35mm.

Here I shot our photo exhibition at the Cégep du Vieux Montréal on HP5+ and HC-110 (surely at dilution B) rated as ASA800. Scanned with Epson software, processed with a mix of Lightroom and Photoshop.

Great photos, Chris, especially the first and fourth.
I can't get HP5+ to work properly in Rodinal although I can with Tri-X. The latter works superbly well for me using the technique advocated over the years by Don Cardwell on APUG (very very gentle agitation every five minutes).
Years ago I very much liked HP5+ in straight Microphen, mainly cos of the highlight detail it preserves and the superb “colour” it gives the grey tones, but it’s at the cost of losing a little sharpness, although, for me, that disadvantage is fully compensated by the tonal gains. As an alternative I used D76 1:1 and it worked well, giving the snap that I sometimes appreciated.
I tried Microdol-X and, later Perceptol, in various dilutions but couldn’t get that great tonality that Erik van Straten gets with a variety of films, including HP5+, using I believe diluted Perceptol. Looking at his photos I realise that I should have tried harder!
We mustn’t forget that the best technique for any individual will also depend on whether development is primarily for scanning or printing. (My comments above refer only to printing).

I have just recently experimented with HP 5
Hoping to supprt Ilford since Kodak's demise

I have not pushed it yet
Instead of Box speed i shot it : M4, DR Summicron, @320 / HC110 @7.5 mins
Waiting for the negs to Dry but It 'looks' like I might be in Love
Will post a shot, once dry & scanned

Interesting, which dilution of HC-110? Dil. B.? I usually develop for 5:30 minutes for HP5 exposed at box speed, 7.5 mins is already pushing territory. But all this depends on a lot of factors which very vastly from photographer to photographer, water source, agitation habits etc. etc.

D'oh!
HP5+ is a fantastic film. The real secret is to any film is to learn how to use it with your chosen developer(s). I personally prefer to use but a few developers.

Jan as in "Jan and Dean"
The only way that I really like HP5+ is if I develop it in a cocktail of HC-110 + Rodinal. Although, I've never tried it in Pyrocat HD. Maybe one of these days I will.

Jan, what's your recipe for HC-110? I just happen to have a bottle of each and I've never been really happy with my HP5 results.

HC-110 Dil E for 7 min (30 sec shorter than advised) @ 20C
Sirup diluted with distilled water.
Constant slow agitation during the first min.
One slow agitation + swirl + gentle tab every minute from there on.
Timer start when I start to poor the developer in.
Start dumping the developer 5 seconds before the time is up.
Immediately followed by rinse with 20C water with strong agiration and one water exchange within 30 seconds. Before putting starting to fixate the negatives.
Still I find HP5+ a bit to contrasty for my taste using good lenses. Works very well with my Holga's.

The best camera is one that still works!
I steered away from HP5+ for years because it's look didn't appeal to me and I'd also succumbed to peer pressure in believing that Tri-X was god's gift to black and white photography!
Quite misguided in hindsight!

I'm not surprised this has happened to someone having viewed some of the pictures added to this thread - some really great shots.
I'm hoping I'll have some time this afternoon to get out and test a roll or two
