Hi,

If you scan B&W film, how do you print the scans? I am not keen on a large A3 printer and I am unaware of any current A4 (letter size for our US members) with gray inks. Typically the small ones have six inks of which only one is black and prints typically suffer badly from metamerism (change of colour depending on light source used for viewing).

Is there a good commercial service one could use?

Print Black & White on an Epson using QuadTone Rip.
You can get a used 7600 which will provide great prints on Hahnemule Photo Rag 188gsm

Best photo-like b&w prints come from HP dye on their Premium Plus papers... any of their cheap photo printers that take the gray cartridge will do (like $99). the letter sized ones are good because you can still print 8x12" prints. I have a 8750. If you like pigments prints, spend $700+ on the current Epson or spend a lot of time swearing and running cleaning cycles on a cheap Epson with MIS quadtones (can't tell you how happy I was to pitch my MIS CIS).

Get an HP... they just work (no metamorism because they only use gray inks and they are more archival than the highend Epson/HP pigments).

I concur, HP 8750s and HP photo plus papers, are the best mono results I've had other than the real thing i'e' darkroom produced silver prints.😎
